Worthy Upgrade?

Yeah Nvidia gets higher scores in 06, i only get about 4k in it with my x1800 XT 512mb at stock, but still it doesn't matter as gamings where its at, and the x1800 XT is faster than the 7900 GT. :p

Bigger 06 score doesn't mean better in gaming. ;)

Its what you can get out of the card that counts for me , and i`ll use what i deem the best card for my purpose, and it aint an ATi at the minute.

Is it worth going from a 7800 GT to a 7900 GT? Is it worth spending the money?

I dont think so, i`d want a bigger upgrade than a 7800 to a 7900 card.

kbc, 5800 is about right with those speeds on core and memory with a dual core processor. I get about 5200 at those speeds with a single core CPU overclocked to 2.7ghz. If you push those frequencies up a bit (which may not be gaming stable) to say 680/1900 (which should be possible at 1.5v) you'll get closer to what i'm talking about. In terms of gaming stable overclocks to the card then it's probably nearer to 6000 with a dual core processor. But for benches, how stable do you need to be?

What are you running you CPU at by the way?

My CPU is a 2.6GHz... what I deem to be stable is no artifacts in games and benchmarking... (probably why I've kept with the existing speeds now)

...when I did increase the core, the FINAL snow test got very minor artifacts as stated in a previous post. But running the test on its own is perfect.

So I've stuck to 630/1800 since. I'm sure it'll probably do more and be stable in games if I increase the core though. :)

GPU idles at pretty high temperatures - 46C... before it was 39-41c on 1.4v. :)

Be interesting to see the insides of some these cases , mines not the neatest , but stays cool and quiet. Ive found the VF900 to be a little loud at full fan speed, are they, or have i good hearing !!!

So do I... though I feel the need to always have it at max after the volt mod. :)

Here's the guts of my system. Image not that clear (phone cam). A lot of hard disks in there and the wiring was kinda made up as I went along since the Seasonic PSU's cable management is pretty naf.

Can be quite warm.

As for A Random name, he really did work the nuts off his X1800XT to get the score he did. I checked his link to ORB when he broke 11,000 in 3dmark05, the core was about 100mhz over what was in his sig and the memory about 300mhz over. He also ramped his CPU up by 0.3ghz. I suspect that the run was not entirely artifact free or gaming stable, but still a monsterous score compared to what most other people can get with an X1800XT.
Doesn't seem to be stopping other people using extreme scores for lower limits. ;) Thanks for making my point for me. :)

You've very welcome, man_from_uncle. Very nice to meet you.

You too. I guess we probably haven't met before now, but I’ve been reading your posts for a while and am glad to formally make your acquaintance. You come across as generally unbiased, a little easy to provoke (but then who hasn't been provoked by a certain nvidia fanboy these last few weeks) but genuinely bright and happy to help. In fact I’m pleased to be posting on a board with a relatively high number of good bright people.

Now I think about it, not many yanks post here do they?

Thanks. :) I am unbiased, despite some people saying otherwise, because I decide between cards on a per-card basis on their features and speed vs. their cost. To me, it's about value for money before anything else.

I guess you could call me a value fan-boy.

You're right in that I am far too easy to provoke into an argument though, by ATi and Nvidia fan-boys alike. ;) It's my biggest flaw, I think. :(
