Would a CPU upgrade make a difference?

I know this question gets asked a hundred times a day - I guess the problem is all the different CPUO/GPU combinations out there.

I have:
  • 4K 240Hz monitor
  • Asus Strix X670E-A
  • Ryzen 7700X
  • Zotac RTX5080
  • 32GB Trident Z5 6400 CL32 (running at 6000 CL30 for some reason)
  • By the way, I use Linux
I almost always use DLSS and will happily enable frame gen for the slower, prettier games.
Right now I'd like some extra performance in The Finals but I don't want this upgrade to be for the sake of one game. Over time I play all sorts.

I realise 4K will push a 5080 but would slapping in a 9850X3D make an appreciable difference?

For some reason my 7700X seems to sit at 90+ degC while gaming despite re-pasting and remounting my DeepCool AK620. I haven't noticed any throttling though.
I'd likely be switching to a Corsair 4000D Frame with a 360 AIO if I got the CPU upgrade.

The Finals benefit from the X3D cache, so you would see some improvement in average FPS
what you will notice more, is that the minimums improve significantly, giving a smoother overall performance

Playing games at 4k, the accepted rule is that the game is GPU bound and CPU has less impact on your performance. If you played at 1080p, the X3D CPU would have a greater impact.

However, if you are happy to buy new CPU, look up bench marks on YouTube, perhaps.

Urgh. I know it's a champagne problem but it's frustrating that I have to move from a card worth £1100 to one worth £3000 if I want any more performance.

get a 2nd hand 7800x3d. you benefit from the x3d v cache for your games, just save a boatload of cash, and at 4k, they be no discernable difference in gaming (or not that I've noticed)...then wait for zen6 cpu's which should have more cores as your true upgrade

It's a hard pill to swallow but high temperatures on a 7700x is by design and not a problem apparently. I prefer the 7700 non X for this reason though. 7800X3D worth looking into, some great deals to be had if you're happy buying OEM.

Cpus from AMD will clock as high as they can, and so increase temps.

Best thing to do is -PBO it and then put a temp limit to it overclocking.

Its what i did and its much faster and temps are down then stock and as temps are down, fans speeds went down with it as well.

My recommendation as well. You'll see a material improvement in lows, and it will only cost you ~£80 net after the sale of your 7700x.

As for the 9800x3d Vs 7800x3d (using an RTX 5090), I made that move and didn't see much material improvement.

Yeah unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) the cpu has such a minimal effect on frame rates at 4K.

The only “upgrade” that makes any sense for @iamgigglz is picking up a cheap 7800X3D. But to be honest the sensible choice is just to spend nothing more, and keep your money aside until the next gen of parts release.

For £80 net, I'd still say 7800x3d is a non trivial upgrade. You'll see a difference, sometimes quite large, over a 7700x in FPS even at 4k in some games e.g. BSG3, Helldivers 2. And I bet OP is upscaling from 1440p with that 5080 in some games where a 7800 x3d will pull ahead of a 7700x even further. It is effectively the one upgrade I'd suggest that would increase performance (and for not much scratch).

A move to a 7800x3d should even allow OP to hold out for a good while through next gen. I have no inclination upgrading to Zen 6 (which will surely be dear) with my 9800x3d, for example. Had I a 7700x, I'd be chomping at the bit for next gen

One thing I always appreciated was an improvement to 1% lows, it makes such a difference to my enjoyment of a game.

Yes, most of the time the max FPS in a game are fine but there's always that one spot in the map when the FPS tanks and my eyes hurt.

If I was OP and had the budget, I would go for an X3D CPU.

I have:
  • 4K 240Hz monitor

  • Is that an OLED monitor? Sounds daft but one thing that can improve your perception and enjoyment of gaming is an OLED monitor.

I reckon your 4K240Hz is going to be sick but try find a good OLED monitor to test quickly and see if that makes an appreciable difference.

I severely under estimated how much better a good quality monitor makes to gaming and have had average monitors over the years.

That and decent audio, either a great 2.1 bookshelf speaker setup or excellent open back headphones with a good DAC.

It’s going to depend on the games you play and how you’re measuring. Some games will see a massive boost even in average frame rates you can see as much as 50% while others are maybe double figures, but its minimum rate where the X3D chips make most difference. It’s definitely worth upgrading from a technical point, but the question is really, is it worth for it X amount money.

Another carbie :)You know the last time you replied to one of my threads? I was asking if I should go 12600k or 5800x...that 5800x was a great choice.

Yes it's an oled - PG32UCDM - and you're absolutely right. A monitor upgrade can be as good as or better than a GPU upgrade sometimes.
Audio-wise I have a pair of DT990 Pros running off a Topping MX5. I'd love a proper speaker setup but my PC's proximity to my kids' rooms is a problem. We're moving soon and that should change.

Amazing, glad it worked so well for you :)

Sounds like you have a fantastic PC!
