Would a external be more reliable than a computer?

i am selling my pc as I moved and can't set it up and want a nice laptop, but currently one of my 1tb drives is practically full(I copied all of c: drive that was possible to reset the computer) and my 750gb I think has around 200gb left, but I do also have a 500gb I salvaged from a previous computer that probably has upwards of 100gb used and so to keep all 3 or to combined I'm going to need a 2tb drive(I do already have a 160gb enclosed drive for back ups that's almost full) and while I don't know my budget, I could get something like a revo or some other slim smaller than xbox one S(or similar size) type computer for under £60 then a 2tb hdd for similar price or likely less used or pay extra if no deals and buy an external, but I don't know what be best??

My 1tb seatgate portable I have for my xb1 I has been brilliant over the last 3/4 months and I've had no data loss with my 160gb laptop or a 500gb wdb laptop drive in an enclosure when accidentally disconnected, but years ago I had a WD 3.5 external and that kept failing a lot and lost a lot of stuff, so had always avoided externals and certainly don't ever want external powered ones again.
