would a GTX 680 run @1440p with 3D maxed?

At decent framerates-No. Simply put the 256 bit problem would limit it ,however, as 3d halfs framerates (or so I understand) I would say no single card alive today would at that resolution. Put it this way, at that res, I have had to resort to xfire 7970's to keep FPS where I like them to be and thats not bringing 3D into it! :)

No. IMO SLI is needed for all 3D if you want to be able to play every game at max.

I was running passive which cuts the height in half (so 1980x560 or something weird) and a single 670 was enough for all but LA Noire.

Apart from Crysis of course where I got about 14 FPS on a 7970 lol.

Depends what latest game.

But I have a 570 and play at 2560 x 1440, so i would say yes, a 680 will be able to play any game at 2560 x 1440 maxed out. *not sure about Metro is max everything*

In order to run 60fps+ with all the bells and whistles on my 2560x1440 dell ultra sharp, I need 2 x 680's.

With 3d as well you would probably need 3 as performance would be cut in half.

He didnt say he wanted 60fps+

30fps is easily playable if its an FPS game. I play GTA4 with mods and its plays fine at 25-40fps

I play in active 3D surround (5760*1080) and need two 680's to get any decent returns and even then, 2 isn't enough. Once you turn AA off (not good for 3D games having AA on anyways), the frame rates soon shoot up.

1080P is the way to go if you want 3D for sure and 1440P if you want the best looking game.

Whilst we're on the subject..... :D

I've been recently kicked out of my man cave due to the Wife's expanding business so I'm now down to one monitor :(. I've had to sell one of my 680's to fund a 120hz BenQ (got to say the smoothness in game is now so much better than 2 x gtx680 @ 60hz on a single monitor).

So now I'm all hard done by and its be Birthday soon, is it worth getting Nvidia vision kit 2 to play BF3 on? Not sure if the single GPU will suffice @ 1080p, what's the general feeling, I usually turn down shadows and AA off for improved FPS but keep the rest of the detail on ultra?

Not BF3 IMO. Tons of games look fantastic though, so if you want 3D and will use it, go for it and 1 680 is more than enough to cope.

I think not.

NO game is good at 30 fps, its just not smooth at all.

Billions of Xbox 360 owners would beg to differ.

I mean don't get me wrong, gaming at 30 FPS is nowhere near as good as 60, but it's obviously not that bad as it hasn't stopped any one buying consoles.
