Would a HP Microserver be good for me?

Hi everyone,

I've currently got a 4 bay Synology and do like it. My uncle wants to get a NAS drive and I would sell him my Synology and perhaps buy a HP Microserver.

Now I would use it for streaming tv shows (SD, 720p and 1080p), streaming DVD's I've ripped, storing music and finally for downloading on Usenet.

The streaming stuff I assume would be quite easy but would the Usenet be possible on a microserver?

I currently have Sickbeard set up on my Synology, its not perfect but it does an ok job. I've tried to use Sabnzb but I found it very flaky.

So will I be able to do the above?

Oh I already have 2 x 2TB drives with no raid. So if 1 breaks they both do.

In the future I'd like to have 4x3TB drives in the NAS with no backup on there. But a backup stored elsewhere
 
I am running sabnzbd+ server on my microserver, running very well! leave the box running and I can access it where ever and its all done through the microserver.

Its just a normal server at the end of the day, with what ever OS you choose to put on it, so as long as your OS can run usenet clients, it won't be an issue :) ( I am running Windows Server 2008 R2)
 
I'd be looking to use WHS, I have one question though (its an idiot question so bare with me)

If I have my NAS plugged into my router, and my laptop connected wirelessly (Windows 7) how would I use WHS on my laptop?

I've never done this sort of stuff before so bit dense!

Using that I'd have full control?

I do have my laptop connected via an ethernet connection when I'm sorting files out on my Synology

Yes pretty much, not a lot you cant do in RDP which you cant do using a normal Keyboard and Mouse.
 
Excellent this is looking more and more enticing.

The main problem I've always had with Sabnzbd is that I have problems reconnecting to it.
I'm away for most of the week and when I get back I log onto my diskstation click the link that takes me to Sabnzbd and it cannot find the page :confused:

Happened a lot, and I just ended up giving up on it. Hopefully as this is through a different server I wont have that problem!

Can't say I have ever had any issues with connecting to SAB :)

You sure its not a config issue? or an older version you were using?

I have mine running on my Microserver all the time, I can access it on HTTP over the internal LAN, or I can access it remotely over https://wanipofisp:portnumber

It was an up to date version. I installed it again on Saturday and will be back home tomorrow. Hopefully, it'll have connected well with Sickbeard and downloaded, repaired and extracted all the files correctly!

I want to do something similar to yours it'd be good when I'm out and about to quickly add something to download so it's available when I get home!

Yeah its handy for this :) If your accessing it remotly, dont forget to use some random port numbers, set-up the username/password on SAB and port forward on your router.
 
Now the last issue I have before I purchase one this month.

Can I take the HDD's out of my Synology put them into my WHS without formatting?

I currently have 2x2Tb drives with all my movies and tv shows on there. Not going to purchase the drives at these current prices.

Shame that prices are so high at the moment, soon as I can get some 3tb drives at a good price I'll be buying 4!

I have a random issue with Sab on Windows keep changing it's https port number, and it has only been since enabling https.

Can you SSH or telnet to your NAS? May be worth running netstat to see if Sab is still running/listening and on what port.

My Microserver turned up today, I'm chucking ESXi on there with FreeNAS doing my NAS/Sab/Sickbeard/Couchpotato and pfSense doing my routing.

If you have lots of disks, FreeNAS has some nice config tools to consolidate them into one storage volume.

PROLIANT N40L 1P 2GB-U INT SATA 250GB 1Y for £239.94
and a copy of WHS 2011 OEM

I want to upgrade the RAM to 4GB and I think that should do for me. Any recommendations on RAM?

Hopefully it'll be easy to set up the actual media streaming side of it, and setting up XBMC

You better get it quick as if you dont you won't be able to get the rebate.
 
Right my plan of action is

•take my 2x2tb drives out of my Synology (format if I have to )
•Install WHS 2011
•Attempt to get Sabnzb ready

Do I need to do anything else or will that be enough?
