Would a server good for this situation?

We're in a similar situation to this in needed to bring the small business teeny network up to scratch but due to the current economic climate the paying of an outside company or god forbid constultancy rates is just not viable :(

I appreciate the economic climate but quite often it can be a false economy to not do it. You could end up wasting a lot of time/effort/money on something which you really don't need or something which, even worse, doesn't work.

Some companies will also come in and do this for free to try and get your business. Give a few of them a ring and see how you get on.

If your data means anything to you you would be wise to buy something with a decent degree of redundancy.

£400 is not enough, thats really the short of it.

400Gb is a fair amount of data, pushing it to an external HDD is..... well, perhaps a little optimistic. What software will you use for this? xcopy in a command prompt wont cut it for reliability. What do you do if this external drive fails?

If your data means nothing to your business, fair enough. Chances are, its a core component of your day to day operation, backing up to at least two tapes in rotation would be the very least I would recommend to protect your data.

How much does each hour of downtime cost your business?
How much does it cost you if you lose everything?

BARE Minimum in my opinion is the following:

A RAID level for data, be it 0+1 or 5.
A reliable form of backup without a single point of failure.
A UPS with capacity enough for the Server.
