Would a Z790 and i5-12600K be ok for gaming in 2025?

Hi all,

So my son wants a gaming PC.

I don't want to spend thousands.

Would something like this be ok? i5-12600K with a RTX-4060

Thanks

Still very capable for gaming, some games are starting to push 8 core / 16 thread requirements - not sure off the top of my head how much the 4 extra E cores contribute there but the next step up CPU wise is considerably more expensive.

Depends entirely on what games you wish to run and at what resolution, quality and desired fps. You will also need a monitor capable of displaying what you are aiming for. That said, these parts will be absolutely plenty for most people. bearing in mind that this forum is mostly used by enthusiasts who will notice differences where the layman would not.

Thanks guys

So he wants to play Fortnite.

Currently, he plays on PS5 on a LG TV - 4K at 120fps.

I am not sure if that will be possible on this type card?

Would 1440p be a better option? (Sorry, I am not a gamer - So I don't know much)

4060 with good quality settings will struggle a bit at 4K in the game, 4060ti or better 4070 performance would be more ideal.

yes, but suck it and see at 4k first, but it will be pretty terrible, there is ultra low settings option on fortnight so that might help a little,
then, if uou cannot get it running acceptably, move down to 1440p, or maybe even a 120hz 1080p one,
If you do move down to 1440p , buy well, and buy once, with an OLED version! because it is pretty stupid to not buy into OLED when buying new now, if there is the option.

I mentioned in another thread that RE: the 12600K and Z790, it depends on what you're paying, but the 14600KF and a cheap B760 board is likely to be better value than a 12600K and Z790.

I wouldn't bother with a Z board unless you're really into overclocking, because the main reason to buy the 12600K is the price.
