Would adding a R9 295x2 be worth it?

My R9 290 doesn't really do enough for me anymore when it comes to some games mostly BF4 and the now upcoming BF1 so would it be worth adding a R9 295x2? Would get a GTX 1080 but I would like to be able to use Freesync still.

If you want to keep using FreeSync why not get rid of your R9 290 and get a single Fury/Fury X graphics instead. R9 295X2 is basically two R9 290Xs so they would be slowed down by the weakest link in your setup -> R9 290. Not to mention massive power consumption and high probability of stuttering with your triple crossfire rig.

8GB not really needed for 1080p resolution. It's at 4K games start taxing card's VRAM but then there is not enough raw power for RX 480 to deal with those high resolutions. 8GB on midrange graphics is more about marketing than anything else imo.

Thanks for the contributions I have thought of the VRAM and that doesn't bother me too much as I've never really gone above 3.5GB but in the future this will change.

The reason I am not interested in a Fury X is the price is still very high for them and the price to performance isn't high enough.

Does anyone hold out any hope that Vega will match a GTX 1070 because if so I am more than happy to wait.

Which R9 290 you have? They can easily overclock and wait until Vega. At 1080p with latest drivers chews anything, and has full support of DX12.

Saying that, if you can find a cheap 295X2, sell the R9 290 and keep the 295X2 only.

Let's hope it's between that and a 1080 so those of us with Fury cards can get a decent upgrade from the die shrink. If not I may go with a G-sync monitor which will then tie me to the team that at least has upgrade options.

It makes me wonder how they'll deal with the fact that performance requirements should eventually top out, What will they then do to get us to upgrade?

Nerf older cards?
Get heavily involved with game development so that we end up needing 24 gb's of ram for maxed 1080p gaming?

They'll obviously need to find a way to make people on 2020's Titan XXX and the Furious fury need an upgrade in 2022.

I imagine that AMD will end up with topping out power consumption then make it so they refine it for more performance awhile using the same amount of power.

I have one with modded on Gelid Icy Vision as it is a reference design and I can't overclock it over 1050mhz core without adding voltage. I have seen a R9 295x2 in the MM for £270 so am really considering getting it, if it doesn't work out well with my R9 290 I can always sell this and keep the other card.

Hi, I'm in the same boat with my 290. Iv been getting slow downs to about 20fps on doom (1440p) for fairly long periods of time. Same for BF4

Looked at vram usage and it's not maxed out, so I think the card itself is throttling. So I'm going to strip mine down tommorow, clean the fins and re apply some new thermal compound. Hopefully that reduces the slow downs.

Mine is a reference 290, unfortunately AMD don't have a viable upgrade path.... Even the fury X's seem to be out of stock on ocuk :( (I was considering one of those for a while)

Imo adding a 295 wouldn't make sense, unless you don't mind wasting money - but in that case a 1070 would do better anyway and it will have better resell value if you decide to sell it and get a Vega or the upcoming 1080ti. Still, for those cards the earlier you could see them is around December, but more likely February-March 2017. So if you can wait that long..
