Would an i3 stand up to BF3?

No. Just because it utilizes SMT that doesn't mean it isn't a "normal" dual core.

Okay, I'll make sure to tell anyone that asks if Deus Ex or BF3 will be fine on a dual core that it will be fine since an i3 with hyper-threading can handle it okay, even though the majority of dual core CPU's don't utilise SMT and will handle both games horribly because they are optimized for 4 threads.

When HT becomes the Norm, Then a dualcore processor with it can be considered Normal. But

1. It's an Intel tech, So no AMD processors have it
2. Not all Intel Processor have it

So I would say your statement is incorrect.

is that a joke?
why are you gaming on a server???
No joke. I bought the ML115 as an ESX server but no longer use it for that purpose. With the addition of a GTX460 it has handled everything I have been able to throw at it (including BFBC2) and has become my default gaming PC.
With all this talk of BF3 only liking highly clocked quad cores I am genuinely worried that the opteron 1354 which only runs at 2.2ghz will struggle. Upgrading the CPU is impossible, and as I desperately want to play BF3 when it arrives I may end up needing to buy an entire new gaming PC.

Where's the joke?

Instead you should tell people that Deus Ex or BF3 will be fine on a good dual core.

If you were to say those two games run fine on quad cores, would that include lower end ones like a Phenom I 9550 for example?

Again, the addition of HT doesn't suddenly make it an abnormal dual core that deserves special treatment when being compared with other CPU's.

This is for all you guys that are not blessed with large bank rolls, and can afford the high end everything. For the guy on a budget it will run on a duel core with a good mid range GPU. Just on lower settings running on DX10. But they do recommend a quad core and above for good game play and use of DX11. ( INTEL and AMD)

aye, i think the term dual/quad etc cores have been blurred over the years, intel with their smt and now amd with bulldozer, they market it as a octo core but it isnt really as it shares a fpu between two, so cant really be called classically a true 8 core chip.

tbh guys if you are going to try and run bf3 on low settings i wouldnt bother. save the £40 and start building on it for a new system. these new games need to be played the way they should be, max powered. no sense spending £40 on a game that will look like Quake 1 by the time youve stripped it naked to get 20fps.

If some games run like crap on all dual cores except certain i3's then why wouldn't you give them special treatment?

That's because "most" dual cores aren't good anymore (Core 2 Duo's and Phenom II X2's are old and have low IPC) Dual core i5's, and a couple Pentiums (with that cheeky Intel update) have HT as well, not just i3's . As newer CPU's arrive and IPC increases I'm betting non-HT dual cores will fair OK in 4-threaded games aswell.

BTW you dodged an earlier question.

Perfectly put my friend.

Here are some benches for bfbc2 with AMD and Intel

"The results we recorded in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 were similar to Dirt 3's. We find that as long as this game is powered using a quad-core processor, the performance is satisfactory"

Seems like a sensible assessment to me, even the Athlon II X4 gets over 80fps when paired with a high-end graphics card @ 1920x1200.
