Hey guys, i'm having a few contemplations, i love my 3500+ always have, never had a problem with it and its ran rock solid for nearly 2 years, the only thing is, it does seem to have having 1 or 2 niggling problems with Vista, just not being able to handle as much as it could with XP, naturally, so i'm thinking the dual core avenue is natural progression, but the main actual game i play is World of Warcraft, which the current system can handle right now, although i'm not sure what kind of performance i would be getting in Vista gaming and doing what i do in XP.

From what i've read i should be ok with a bios flash on my k8 neo platinum4 and it should be fine for the 939 4200, or 4600 (not sure if it is worth the extra) and maybe a new cooler, scythe ninka perhaps?

Your thoughts on if this is worthwhile? I know some people will say geta C2D, but for the cost of one right now i couldn't justify it if this CPU can put some beef into the machine to handle vista & more apps at a good rate.

Thanks :)

Take a look at the X2 3800+, at £65 theyre a bargain :)

EDIT : Assuming youre on AM2, if youre on 939 the same cpu is £94

if 939 the opteron 165 is about £99 if you know where this has 2mb level 2 cache downside only a 9 multiplier so only consider if your mobo goes beyond 300 fsb

Go for it mate. Bought a 4600+ recently & coming from a 3000+ it was the best PC purchase I'd made in awhile. Multi-core is certainly the future :)

If you plan to overclock the socks out of it get the Ninja (make sure it fits). If not, stock HSF or even this will be sufficient

Thanks guys, yeah i'm currently running a S939 3500, the main reason i was thinking of the 4200/4600 over an opty was that i haven't ever overclocked, i don't know why, just haven't, maybe i worry too much about doing it! hehe :)

But as far as i'm knowing, my board would be ok with a bios flash? (Using oem vista so i bloody hope so lol) if so, i would prob go with a 4200 and Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, as my current arctic frezer has been in there for 2 years and is beginning to whine a little bit! :)

Thanks for your help

Tim

Yeh your board should be fine! Even if you didnt overclock it would still be a nice upgrade, and you always have the option laters on if you require some more speed!

you're in the same boat im in (more or less), ive a a64 looking for a small upgrade to a dual core 939 cpu, i've narrowed my choices down to a X2 3800 or a 165.

Well, i also found a 165 for £99, but wasn't sure as like i said, never oc'ed, so maybe a 4200 would suit my OC virgin'ness better? :)

not really, 165 is slightly slower at 1.8 but has 1mb cache instead of the 4200's 512, so fairly evenly matched and if you fancied trying you're hand at overclocking the 165 would be a better option in my opinion.

got a 4200 x2 while they were on offer on ocuk a few weeks back £88 bargain :) see if gibbo will put them back on next week .

get a opteron 165 if you can. I just got one and just had a quick fiddle with overclocking. Got it running at 2.4 at default volts atm. Im very impressed with it so far.
