Would DBAN work on an already formatted and empty disk?

Hello all,

My 4TB internal hard drive started malfunctioning recently (bad sectors appeared) and I since it is still covered by warranty I decided to format it under Windows and send it back for replacement.

Then I realised that simple formatting would not make the date go away permanently and it could be somewhat easily recovered by technicians or repair men.

If I run DBAN on the already formatted and emptied hard drive would that make sure no data can be recovered?
Or does DBAN require actual data to be present on the hard drive prior running?

Thank you very much.
