hi, ive got slow speeds with my network, transfering files from pc to server seems very slow.
my router is the crap sky Netgear DG934G 10/100

pc has gigabit and server has gigabit

so would getting a switch help speeds or do nothing at all.

i could go for faster router but means hacking router for details and going against t&c of sky

a 'good, decent' gig switch for home can be had for £40 quid or so..(for a 5 port) depending where you shop. If the op is planning to expand his network, it may be worth it (buy cheap buy twice) but that should provide a speed increase over what is essentially a cheap 100 mb switch. I would have thought.

Erm, what?

What constitutes "very good", because that certainly doesn't fulfil my definition.

In fact, it's decidedly rubbish.

I got one from OCUK and it's never failed me...works out the box and it's cheap..what more do you want..jam :D

I'd suggest you went for a HP Procurve 1800-4G, slightly more expensive but really good.

Either way just remember to change your jumbo packet settings if you really want to max out the speed.

ok so i know nothing about jumbo packets so i done a bit of reading!
using the gigabit switch will by pass the router (10/100) allowing jumbo packets?

could you direct me to a decent guide on how to change them thanks :)

Why on earth would you purchase at Netgear when you can have a HP Procurve for pretty much the same price!

why...

reason 1: because i know nothing about which is better or not hence the reason im asking silly questions !!

reason 2: ocuk dont sell the hp procurve!!!

Sorry I wasn't referring to you, I was making comment on the other poster that said about using them to imagine machines etc

Back on topic, I'd strongly advise the HP Procurve switches, for the money they are great

1. Fail.
2. I didn't buy it.
3. I wasn't 'imagine machines' I was transferring images (about 10,000,000 tiff images)
4. It was all I had to hand.
5. I already have a 1800-8G procurve switch in my house.
6. I have used netgear metal switches I have recommened that ocuk sells, with good results, for offsite network setups hence my recommendation.

fair enough, I think I may be overly biased against netgear kit due to the amount of time I have spent troubleshooting it and it giving me problem, for home use it is probably fine
