Hey guys,

After SR2 failed so bad I'm considering buying GTA4 but I don't know if it'll give playable FPS on my PC.

Specs are :
E4600 @ 3.00Ghz, 4GB Ram, HD3870 (Will be upgrading to a 4850 in a few weeks.) Vista Ultimate 64.

Any information is appreciated.

Cheers

e4600 will be limiting (as will the 3870 untill you get a 4850)

You will definitely be able to run it but you won't have the best settings. 30fps (don't let anyone fool you, 30fps IS smooth) on low-medium I'm guessing. Even with the gfx at low it is worth playing though!

Cheers for the info. Yeah 30FPS is good enough for me.

Low-Medium settings would make the game look ugly I guess?

Is there any other optimization patches being planned for release soon or will GTA4 always be demanding?

I wouldn't expect 30 fps. I get variations around that from 23-45 with my spec in sig. I am really CPU limited, so bear that in mind, a quad is ideal it seems, though i'm sure a high spec dual could do it just fine too.

My spec (new PC built with old CPU and graphics until I can afford an upgrade:

E6550@stock / 4Gb RAM / ATI 1950 Pro(512mb)
Average FPS: 26.79
Duration: 36.96 sec
CPU Usage: 83%
System memory usage: 46%
Video memory usage: 96%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1280 x 800 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: Medium
Render Quality: Very High
View Distance: 10
Detail Distance: 17

It's more than playable, no stuttering or problems even at that FPS. So you're setup would be fine. You don't need 30+ FPS to play, what you do need is a solid reliable 18+FPS in this game to be able to have fun anything above that is just e-penis time.

Are you blind or have ultra slow responses ? Or playing drunk or stoned all the time perhaps ?

It's only going to look horrible on my pc anyway ! :p

It barely looks different at minimal compared to maxed settings...
The console version runs quite poorly too, 32 or 33 fps avg. iirc.

I could not enjoy 18fps, even as a low point. That is far from a playable and enjoyable framerate, probably about half as much than what is needed to make a game sufficiently playable in my opinion, and probably a lot of other people's.

It is a fun game though, i've just unlocked the whole map now.

It's a very demanding game on the hardware. Though I would agree that it is not coded efficiently enough to make use of all the power a typical gaming PC can offer.

Bascially if you want 40+ fps on at all times you need a quad core, this is what happened when I upgraded:
