Hi,

I am thinking of replacing my Ati 2900XT which i had now almost for 2 years.

It is still a great card but I feel like could use more FPS in MW2, i only play games few hours a week or month, and mostly it is MW2 or AAO.

My current rig which i did build years ago myself is:

Silverstone TJ06 case
Asus p5w dh Deluxe
2gb of OCZ 677mhz ram
Conroe E6600 2.4 clocked to 2.9ghz
Ati 2900XT 512mb
Belinea 22'' monitor 1650 x res so that is my max res i play games at.

I was hoping that i will be able to upgreat the whole system but looks like i ll have to wait till next year, so therefor i though maybe replacing 2900XT would do the trick atm.

Question, would ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 be much better than my 2900XT and would I actually be able to see the difference in fps? I would like to think that my system ain't that bad, and i could still cope with it for few more months.

Regards ;)

Its sits between a 4870 and a 4890 but on a smaller process. So it'll be around 50-75% faster than what you have, possibly way more with AA but it'll also run a fair bit cooler.

2900XT = 3870 in performance.

The 4850 is about twice the performance so expect more from the 5770.

Okay, hopefully it won't be as noisy as my 2900XT on full load. But Yeah if i wont find anything better for such a price Ill get one of these next Friday.

Thanks for your comments.

BTW, anyone knows which Fan would be the less noisy ? Powercolor has got some interesting oldish design.

Anyone else has something to add ?
Yeah you may wanna consider getting some DDR2-800 or preferably DDR2-1066 to replace your older DDR2-666, that must be a laggy system with memory running sync [1:1] at 333MHz . . . .

I just did the same for a friend, sold his 2GB DDR2-666 for £20 and bought 4GB of DDR2-1066 for £40 . . . . so about £20 spent and much improved system, that was also an E6600 but running at stock with the new 4GB memory set to run a DDR2-1066 still!

Good point mate, will def consider as one of the possibilities.

Just saw one of these Palit GeForce GTX 275 896MB GDDR3 i guess it can't be much faster than ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 ? Besides Ati card has DX11 advantage and is cheeper, could get 1066 ram instead as u said. ;)

GTX275 is about 10-15% faster. The 5770 is cooler, smaller, and uses less power (and has DX11 not that that really matters).
The 5770 is roughly equivalent to a 4870, and having had both the 2900XT and the, the 4870 is quite a bit faster.
(The 2900XT was a trade, it's actually still not that bad)

The 4890 was the GTX275s competitor btw (at stock, a 1GHz 4890 flew). At £120 if you're looking at the GTX275, might be an option.
If you have a crossfire board then 5770 crossfire might be worth a look in the long run once subsequent drivers are out and we can judge any performance differences made :)

If you are playing at max res then you will see a huge improvement. The 5770 is more than twice as fast in CoD. You will be able to play at 1680*1050 with everything maxed and still have 65-70fps average.

Okay, will keep posting what ever ill decide to do and review it back at later stage. ;)

That's great coz currently i am not able to run mw2 smoothly enough on my highest res. And when i am in the middle of action fps drops big time, there is even 1 outdoor map where i get only 25 fps an average, but that is only in that one, every other map seems to run very good considering how old my system is.

Ta,

V.

Wouldn't bother too much about the memory bandwidth - unless your doing a lot of very memory intensive stuff... benchmarking 3D Marks from CAS5 667MHz to CAS5 1152MHz saw a difference of just over 5% in performance - so for gaming it probably won't make much odds.

I had a 2900xt untill it broke on me, so just ordered a new 5770 (vapor ed), will be interested in the performance increase you get, or if you can wait till friday I can tell ya :)

Yeah I ll wait till Friday mate, let me know how it runs. ;)

Cheers for the link chaparral, g1 , 5770 seem to have a fair boost in fps.
