I'm building a new pc and the gfx is the only bit i haven't got yet.

now do i get a 8800gts or just go for say a 1950pro(512) or XT(256) or even 1900 or 7900 / 7950(going quite cheap these days).
game wise i don't play much these days but do every now and then. i use a 17"lcd now but may get a 19" ws pos 20.1" ws so the screen won't be huge.
i will almost definitely still use XP at least until vista is a bit more sorted.

i know vista is the only OS that uses DX10 + games that use DX10 are a bit low on the ground + i'm going to use XP for a while so i don't need an 8800, BUT i wouldn't be planning a hardware change for a few years (its been 2 1/2 since the last one) and i'm thinking with dx10 to be the new std basiacally any non DX10 card in the very near future will be pretty much worthless.

will say a 1950 pro run dx10 games just without some of the eye candy?

to me a 8800gts is as much / don't laugh now / 'future proof' as you can get now unless my plans change and i decide to run a hYowge monitor or off my 37"lcd telly i don't need more power a gts is amble for at most 20.1 "

what you think??

you say your not into gaming that much what games do you play? an x1950xt is going cheep now (135£ i think) and that is a lot better than the pro, and also beats the 7950GT would be ok for dx10 games running in dx9 mode with AA/AF turned off but a lot of things still high.

If the XT is £135, just another £35 buys you an 8800GTS 320, which would outperform it by miles. I wouldn't worry about the DX10 capabilities much to be honest, though it may start to become more of a factor soon. In "bang for buck" though, the cheap 8800GTS are damn impressive.

Well if you dont really play that much games then I would just get an average card now and upgrade later. I know you dont upgrade frequently but if you was to buy later you would probably be paying a lot less.

I sold my X1950 and have ordered the OCUK 8800 GTS. I think the difference in price is worth it, its a more powerful card and will be good for dx10 content added to current dx9 games. For Crysis and other "proper" dx10 games, the cards that will appear later in the year will be better.

8600gt is what i would go for to tide me over so i can still play games yet the advanced video functions of the card for hd video will come in handy.

If your seriously into games then i would say yes.

Im sat ready and waiting after seeing the potential of some new titles :D

If you want the rig to last more than a year without upgrading, then go for a GTS or HD2900XT. By May 2008, we'll have a few DX10 titles available (Crysis will be the main benchmark for cards), and all upcoming games will be using DX10 too. Also, DX10 cards will hold their second-hand value a bit longer.

It would be silly not to buy a Dx10 card now, not for Dx10, but for their far superior Dx9 performance, if you want the fastest Dx9 cards around then you have to buy a Dx10 one. :)

Well for at least the next 2 or so years i wouldnt expect a single game to come out that will be DX10 only, so for the budget gamer i dont think DX10 is a big deal.

The X1950pro is a well priced & reasonably fast card.
Slightly slower but with DX10 is the 8600GTS.
The next step up would be to an 8800GTS 320MB.

The 8600GT is worse than a 7600GT i believe as far as performance goes on current games & so i would stay away from it.

Thats only for the 8800 series & if his budget allows its a good choice but it didnt look like he wants to spend that much.

Wait for the ATi DX10 cards to come out, you'll have more options and it may have an effect on the price of the NVidia cards (not long to wait now anyhow).

Yeah it is, and in his OP he did say now do i get an 8800 GTS, so the answer is yes as it can't be touched in Dx9 performance by any Dx9 card. :)

a 8800gts is well affordable, i don't exactly have a budget - its more a case of getting the right card - which is looking more and more like a 8800gts, but if another card came available say on the MM at a snip i was wondering if it is a worthwhile purchase. i know DX10 isn't needed right now, but in a few months the games will be about more DX10 cards will be about and i think any DX9 card will be almost of no value.

i does seem a 8800gts is the way to go, unless another card comes up at a absolute bargain - then that way i could do vista, DX10 card upgrade in a year and not have totally thrown my hard earned away.

not sure if i can wait for ATI's offerings aren't they still a few weeks away + if i can get my hands on one ;)

Well at £170 the 8800GTS is a great buy, so in that sense it would be silly not to buy a dx10 card.

But DX10 support really just the cherry on top, the actual cake itself is the outstanding performance in DX8/DX9/OGL.

In all likelihood current low/mid-range DX10 hardware will be too slow to run most decent DX10 games well in any case. It'd be kinda like running DX9 games on a 9500pro.
