I went on a roadtrip to the lake district several weeks ago and ended up spending a few hours froliking around in some half frozen waterfalls, ended up on my bum at one point which was entertaining.
I rattled a few shots off and wondered what people think of them, be as harsh as you like :)

Taken with the 17-40L, ISO 50 mostly taken around F22 for between 4-20 seconds <I think> used a hama polariser to get rid of some of the glare and provide some visability into the rock pools..

Like those. The third is the pick of the bunch for me. Might just be me, but I think the second's a bit soft in comparison to the other two?

The first and last are the winners for me, but the second isn't too shabby either. I think the third one just tips it, a beautiful capture and just the right shutter speed. :)

Well, the first and last are full frame shots, the 2nd one I was shooting into the sun, and didn't have an ND grad with me, so the top of the image is slightly blown out which I think has contributed to the softness, i've simply cropped the top off it to remove the sun and lens flare..

Thanks,

I wasn't sure whether going too slow on the shutter would lose the effect of motion, and just look more like someone pouring pints of milk in upstream, but I found using a slightly faster shutter <0.8sec> tended to just make things look harsh and aggressive in the dull light.

I really like your photographs and photography but these first two are not those.

I am constantly thinking waterfall yet in no: 1 I am just seeing iced shaped objects all the time while having trouble finding the waterfall. (I want to say wow but I would be saying that to the formation of ice in that location and not to the waterfall)

The same again in number 2 but you captured a nice waterfall there. However the forground rocks are just too dominant in your shot. When I view It I look at the waterfall first and then find myself forced to view the rocks and back to the waterfall which to me says there is an element interfering with the main subject. Also the environment is a tad overexposed for me with some apparent glare.

Number three I really like. The exposure on the waterfall has given a very mystical flow of water which pours beautifully into the pond area surrounded by this surreal and alien like atmosphere which I always find is a key objective when photographing waterfalls. I find I like them to say something odd about a scene.

Hope that wasn't too critical!

Johnny :)

the first personally has a bit to much going on for me over textured! the seconds seems to have a little glare around the middle and is a little drab as a pictures. Third by far is the best all round in composition and colours captured although the pool is a little distracting as i like the smooth crispness of the ice formation

Not at all lol, honest C&C is worth its weight in L glass :D

I know what you mean about the ice making things look annoying in the first, I think that some better light or sunshine would have made things better to get some colour into the rocks and grass, and take the emphasis off the ice, or failing that recomposition I guess.

Second one I only noticed the foreground rocks after cropping to get rid of the overexposed top half of the picture, which has leaked into the rest of the image, I guess its pretty much a non starter without a grad filter, but I liked the waterfall so marched on regardless lol..

Well they are very nice. As long as your happy with what you got then its a job well done. I noticed you said you were on your bum at one time... a photographer once told me never to be put off by getting wet. I followed his words exactly and climbed up a small waterfall with my camera sometime in the last year! Actually its twice ive done it now. Once with a pair of trainers on and again in wellies! :D

I find that the biggest problem for me is that when i've got a camera and tripod and i'm in "tog mode" I seem to lose all fear and end up clambering around all over the place, no doubt i'll break a leg one day lol..

Keeps me off the streets I guess!
