Hi :)
Need some help please on upgrading my CPU

I have a AMD 939, 64 3.0gig processor and would like to put the AMD 64 4.0gig as they are so cheap on OC.
First would my current motherboard handle it if the BOIS was up to date?
Would i need a another heat sink and fan?
Would MY PSU be able to handle it to?

Been trying to look at the motherboard web site but have no luck in what it can really do.

Current PC specs
AMD 64 3gig on LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-D
2gig ram GForce 7800 GT Oc 256M
Sound blaster X-FI
ViewSonic 19in VX922

any help would be great
Thanks all

for starters it doesn't run at those speeds, those are just performance ratings compared to older Intel CPU's.

The San Diego 4000+ 2.4Ghz is excellent though, mine is overclocked to 3Ghz and is very good.

I would imagine it should be all compatible, what PSU do you have?

Hi i have a Antec Truepower 430w PSU
but i have one of those Thermaltake cases with 7 fans

You recon it will be all ok

I'd imagine it would be a 90nm CPU then, your setup up should be able to cope with the 4000+.

You though about about going dual core at all?

Yer have been looking at them, i think my mother board can take the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core, but i have no idea what speed it will take. would it be better than the AMD 64 4gig as im into my gaming. /cheer for Vanguard & BF2142. lol

Here is a link to my Motherboard to see what u think
Thanks for all the help by the way

The X2 should work fine in the Lanparty, most games are still single threaded though so that might be a disincentive performance wise.

It might be better in the long run though to ditch the single core and go dual core as games/programs begin to be optimised to the latter.

No worries

In most cases the motherboard manual would tell you how to check that. I dont have one of those boards, but ASUS utility can tell you what your current version is, and then it can connect and look for updates. Perhaps see if your utility also does that ?

Also try downloading a program like cpu-z (www.cpuid.com) it can tell you what your BIOS level is in the mainboard section (usually anyway!)
