Would new Graphics card prevent Windows and Icons moving about?

Hi Guys,

I have an old Radeon 5850 connected via HDMI cable to my AOC monitor.

Each time I turn off the monitor, icons and windows change position.
Since the monitor is no longer detected, I think the screen resolution changes, then when I turn it back on, the resolution resets.

Apparently an HDMI switch might solve this issue.
Does the window \ icon moving also happen with newer graphics cards?
If this doesnt happen on newer cards, it would be just the incentive I need to upgrade.

Sounds like you running an older version of windows then windows 8..

As I remember my desktop icons use to do this on a few of the older window versions..

If your using windows 7, right click on desktop, personalise, left hand side says change desktop icons, click and check if allow themes to change. If its ticked, untick it and apply. Mine was doin this few days ago on fresh install, seems ok now..

Its unchecked.

Thanks for the suggestion.
A couple weeks back I spent a couple hours researching this issue and tried the various suggestions I found.

Sounds like a problem i had, it turned out to be a dodgy HDMI cable. the monitor and GPU was no talking right because of the cable and it would load in stock res 800 before the drivers kicked in setting it to 1080 then all the icons would be in the top left of the screen.

turned out my £30 cable was poo and a £1.99 cable is now in use :D

I think I've tried that before.
I'll swap my cables to test, just to be sure. :)

I've seen this problem on windows 7 desktops and sometimes it's down to corruption in the user profile.

Try creating a new user and logging on. System will create a blank default profile/desktop. Try moving some icons and rebooting to see what happens.

If they also move, then at least you can rule that out of the equation. If not, it's due to profile corruption. In which case, you could bite the bullet, delete your profile and start again.

HTH :)

That sounded promising.
When researching previously one of the suggestions was to go through the registry and edit monitor profiles.
Its possible a monitor profile could have been configured in the user profile.

Hi Guys,

The issue has kind of been resolved.
I had my screen resolution set to 1920 x 1080. Its a comfortable resolution and everything was easily visible.

While testing I changed my resolution to the recommended resolution of 2560 x 1440.
Since then icons haven't moved.

Im not overly keen on the reduced size of fonts and everything else.
So far resizing items hasn't been that great.

I'll muck around with them when the new graphics card turns up.

Thanks for your suggestions.
