would overclocking my i7 3770k get me a performance boost?

Which ram and speed could you get it to run... Mine fell over after 1866? It wouldn't boot. It may have been the Asrock Z77 Extreme 6 holding it back. I have my i7 3770K at 4.4 with 1.3vcore. Gaming was about 65C, all cores 75c with a 10 year old Corsair H70.

I've never looked at ram or overclocking it, the only thing I've done is change the individual core ratio limit. I'm not sure where to start with ram but the problem is that I also use this computer for various businesses so I can't risk bricking it.

When I built my new AMD rig I'll probably look at some proper overclocking though :)

Not sure what you mean by sus? All I've done is change the individual core ratio limits. I can get to 4.4 but when I try 4.5 I can't get into Windows. I suspect voltage is the issue?

Have you stress tested this overclock using something like linpack? By sus i ment suspicious since power consumption on that cpu should be way higher than 65w when its overclocked. Dunno if its throttling at that power point or something else

Ah I see, I don't think it's throttling as when running benchmarks the numbers don't seem to drop but it's something I'll look into further though cheers. I've got a few different types of software for testing including some brutal intel one which it passes fine.

I've not done any extensive stress testing as the processor never really maxes out with what I use the computer for. I ramped it up to 4.4 yesterday and it was still stable but at 4.5 it would boot into Windows so I dialled it back to 4.3. Never had any issues at this level and it still runs pretty cool.

Well, that was quite a bit more information to look at lol Here's some screenshots from various tests (I'll do as links so as not to flood the screen) and it doesn't look like thermal throttling is happening. Is there something else I should be looking at? Sorry for the thread hijack, although hopefully it may also help.

I had a closer look at my ram and it was only running at the standard, so I've increased it to 1600MHz which seems to have made a slight improvement in ARMA 3. I'm not sure increasing it any further will be worth it and I'll be donating this ram, mb and cpu to my son soon so maybe best I just make do until I built my new rig?

Thanks for bringing it to my attention though, otherwise I would never have made my ram run at its correct speed.

Oh well, the RAM is back to crappy low speed as I was getting BSOD's. Everything seems to be stable again. That sucks.

I know I'm late to the party, but I did notice a significant improvement with my chip when I overclocked it. Hoping to eek out enough life to see me to Zen4!
