My first router from sky was rubbish, its range couldnt reach to my room which is directly above me, the 2nd (current) router they sent me is also quite rubbish, its got good range but no matter how close you are to it, VERY bad signal, on a ipod touch it doesnt even connect, well it does but as soon as you load a page signal goes down. On a laptop you will connect to it but page will load epicly slow. I had to send my first one back, the current one i have now is a sagem F@ST250.

Will i get away by buying a router on my own choice and plugging it in?

It works, I ran my own for 2 years.

Apparently they can detect that you're not running their router and kick up a fuss but I haven't seen any proper evidence of this, just random comments.

You'll need to get your username/password from a well known site as Sky won't give it to you.........

would it be safer to ask them before i continue? what site will give me the username and password?

how do i do that?

I'm not sure how locked down the Sky routers are but I think they are Netgears? So login to the router (usually http://192.168.0.1) and find the Wireless section, it should then give you the option of changing the channel. Default is usually 8 so try something low like 3 or 4 then something higher like 10 or 11 and see if it helps.
