Say, for instance, i plugged the the 4 pin plug of the 20+4pin connectors of my power supply into the cpu's dedicated 4 pin power input socket instead of the cpu 4pin connector on the psu, would it break the cpu? and explain why when i now turn the computer on after rectifying the mistake, the pc outputs no display, no beep sequence and the caps lock lights wont flash on and off when asked?

If the answer is yes, feel free to laugh.

Sounds like it did. What PSU do you have, because the main power cables from mine had big 'For CPU' and 'NOT for CPU' labels on :/

mine just says 12 and 24, in hindsight it was pretty obvious, but i didn't realise the CPU is 12v, all made sense after I found that out..........

So do we think the mobo is shanked as well? I really hope not, reckon I can get away with getting a replacement CPU for free, but if they're both bummed, it could be a little harder to explain.

Surprised the +4 even fits in the ATX+12 connection. You got several problems there, the extra 4 pins carry 1 ground, 1x12v, 1x5v, and I believe a -12v as well, not sure on that might be another +5vsb. The ATX+12 on the other hand is just 2 earth, and 2 +12's. So at least 1 rail of the PSU is being shorted out, and as I doubt the pin shapes are the same, its probably possible that there are multiple rails being shorted.

This could damage the PSU, the motherboard, and any device connected to the motherboard.

If the motherboard is fried it wont necessarily beep even if the CPU/Ram/PSU are fried as well.
