Would this build be enough to handle...

... some decent level gaming? Eg: Overwatch @ 100+FPS, Civ 6 with nice graphics/fast AI turns, SW Squadrons. At 1440p.

- Ryzen 3600
- GTX 1660 Super
- 16gb RAM

Any recommendations on coolers (is liquid cooling necessary at this level?) and power supplies wouldbe appreciated too.

This is kind of a stop gap build to see with my own eyes what can handle my needs and is aimed at being quickly upgradable.

Cheers.

1660 Super will probably get 120-140fps in Overwatch at that resolution. The 3600 is still a very competent processor, albeit prices are pretty poor compared to 12 months ago (a trend you'll see on everything unfortunately).

Memory wise, you'll want 3200 or 3600mhz speed ideally, C16 latency too. Ryzen loves fast memory.

The 3600 comes with a decent stock cooler, certainly enough to be getting on with. You can always change it out later if you're not happy with noise or thermals to save on spending now.

Do you already have a motherboard or any reason to go AMD, as a curiousity? With current pricing, I'd say an Intel i5 10400f is a much better value proposition due to the inflated prices on Ryzen chips, seemingly driven by the rarity of the 5000 series

Not particularly, I've just been swayed over the past couple of weeks watching video after video and hearing Ryzen being the way to go these days. I'm not intending to build until end of Jan at the earliest so hopefully prices will level out a little! If they don't, I'm open to looking at Intel again for sure.

I am set on this monitor, though! https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07SCX1JG2/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1
Not certain if it's Gsync compatible, though. I know the 1080 one is full Gsync but that one suggest FreeSync2 only... seems weird to have one size of the same monitor Gsync and the other not.

Fair enough, just something to keep it mind (and it's been a while since Intel were considered the 'value' option!). Monitors are an odd one. My Dell is a 'Freesync 2' monitor, but it works flawlessly with the 3070 and GSync. Most of them do these days, the GSync badge literally means it has a proprietary chip whereas Freesync is more like an open-source setup, if you get me?

I'm with ya. I think I'm getting too hung up on it and for the price, the Omen seems to be a good pick. I know many pro OW players users the 1080 version, if not all! Not that I'm anywhere near that level, heh.

I'll definitely reconsider Intel come next month. I just put together a reasonably priced build on here with a 10600k. Much to consider!

As you said you're not building until late Jan just keep an eye on the market. Looks like the Ryzen 5000 series chips are clearing the backlog now, so I'd say by mid-Jan supply of them should be at a sensible level. In turn, you'd expect this to settle the pricing on the 3000 series back to where it was, so they may end up better value than Intel again. Or maybe not!

Civ6 is a different beast. Late game with the expansion packs on a huge map with a lot of civilisation made my computer wheeze a bit, 3900x 16gb ram 1070gtx on 1440p. It felt like it was short of ram. Lower framerates is usually fine for this sort of game, but there was the odd stutter.

Aye, I was under the impression Civ was more of a CPU driven game. To be honest, anything better than the tree trunk I'm currently playing it on will be a relief :D My current GPU, for example, is a 650ti...

1660super is a pretty decent esport title 100fps+ (1% low) 1080p card. you should be fine with that setup for 1440p gaming (looks like you need to dial down some visual setting to over 100FPS for that 1% low) but it is still perfectly fine

Thanks man. I'm aiming for 1440p, though... and since posting, Cyberpunk has got me looking at the 3060ti.

... if it's ever available :D

Even if I give Cyberpunk a miss for a year or so, you reckon the 1660s would be decent enough for 1440p?
