It'll run but it won't be mega quick. If you set it to Windows Basic (if Win7 doesn't do this automatically) it'll at least run a little easier. If you can upgrade the RAM to 1GB+ (2GB is ideal) it'd be a big advantage. The kids' desktop is a Celeron 3.2GHz single core with 1GB DDR RAM and that runs Windows 7 just fine for browsing/email/YouTube etc.
it depends on too many factors, you will ahve to jsut try it...
I have vista on a p4d 3ghz dual core, with 1gb ram and a 80gb drive it is considerably faster than a core2 2.4 / 3gb ram dell I reinstalled for someone..
if your CPU is a celeron with 128/256 cache and a 400mhz bus forget it, however if its more like a 2mb/800mhz and the hard drive is fast its worth a shot...
It would love 2GB, but 7 does just fine on 1GB. Several VMs, a few client laptops/PCs and my brothers own machine all run beautifully under Windows 7 with just 1GB of RAM
