considering upgrading to SB but rather not have to buy new ram if i can help it.

can i do this? does triple channel simply mean 3 sticks instead of 2 in which case surely it would be fine?

Triple channel means three sticks in the three linked slots. Hence triple channel.

Simplistically there are 3 sticks in a triple channel kit. And yes you can use your current ram on a dual channel set up (assuming both are DDR3).

You can run 3 memory modules (Tri channel) in a dual channel board but I suspect you would be running single channel.

As the guys above say - your current memory will work, however there is a decent chance it will only run in single channel mode. The best solution to this is to buy a single 2GB DDR3 module with the exact specs of your current modules and add it in. DDR3 is pretty cheap again - so this won't cost you much more than £20 and you will have 8GB running in dual channel mode.

That said, is there a specific reason why you want to spend so much money on an upgrade to sandy bridge when your current system (i7 @4GHz) is extremely quick?

I may have the same memory as you (TR3X6G1600C8D) CAS 8-8-8-24 and am having a hard job finding 1 x 2GB stick of this memory.

Only other solution I can think of is to just use 2 of the 3 sticks and go with 4GB for the time being.

Keep the 3rd stick aside until you find a fourth then fit all 8GB.

Yeah i was thinking the same about keeping the extra stick to one side but it would be nce to run 8 gigs, mine is the CMG6GX3M3A1866C7 which is 7-8-7-20 stuff , difficult to get hold off it seems at the right price, contacted corsair sales again, shame i cant find to other people after the same then we could split it :)
