There is a house just down the road that is being completely gutted and a huge extension put on it, the site is boarded up to stop people getting in, most of the time. I walk past it every day and have noticed the following issues:

  • Rubbish is piled up by the fences/boards and on a number of occasions these have collapsed and obstructed the pavement.
  • On a number of occasions workmen have left for the night and left the site open with buckets of bricks balanced in precarious places (on one occasion there was evidence of something falling off the scaffolding and smashing).
  • Broken glass left covering the pavement outside the property.
  • Rubbish all over peoples cars.
  • Tradesmen blocking the roads with badly parked vans for several hours a day.

The ones I was worried about most were them leaving the site open at night (and lets face it children are drawn to places like this) and all the broken glass/bricks/tiles that keep covering the pavement (I stepped in a load of the glass yesterday before I realised, it would have been horrendous for someone in sandals).

The guys doing the work don't seem to understand English, so I am not sure who to go to about the issues before someone gets hurt.

I'm im being honest, if it didn't directly effect me or anyone i'm close to, i don't think i'd bother.

Thats what I was doing to start with, its only when I stepped in a pile of broken glass I got annoyed about it and thought that their carelessness could have taken someones toe off.

If it's breakng H&S rules relating to constuction or causing a obvious obstruction, that could cause problems to people/children in the area then complain.

If you are just being a pain, and have nothing else to complain about, or are just targeting them because they have a job - then let it go.

If they are making noise sometimes, or are building a bigger house than you - then let it go.
Or, if they have decided to build a better looking house with an updated design, that will reduce the price of all the other houses around it - then let it go.

Just take a step back and imagine what it would be like for you if you flattened your house and did the same - only for some grumpy neighbour to come around moaning at your lifelong plan to better your family living environment. Do you even know the owners ?

I think it is clear that they are causing a danger to pedestrians.

I have a job, I only go past there to get the train to/from work every day. I would expect I earn more than them and have little reason to be jealous. They are not professional contractors, from snippets I have overhead they are the owners brothers and he flew them in from Pakistan.

I don't live close enough to hear any noise they make and they don't work when I am home anyway. The house may be bigger but it is being turned into flats for rent.

The house is in a traditional style and I don't really care about house prices - its not close to my house and I live next to a load of (really ugly) council flats anyway which I would expect to have a greater effect that a private landlord converting a house into flats.

well in that case all you were lucky it didn't hurt you, or someone else, report it to your local council.

Speak to the local council.

I think you over analysed what the OP was wanting, which is just a building site that is safe and contained as its on a housing estate.

Sent an email to the council, cost u nothing and they will decide wether is a case here, if the people learn something from it, good, if nothing happens then so be it.

I used to play on building sites, breaking windows, smashing milk bottles, climbing in buidings. Good times

If the sites left open at night, Report it to the local Gypo's they will come round during the night and clean it up real good.
