Would you get your spanners out?

I'm pretty lazy, so a lot of my tools are to cut time as short as possible.

The best thing I have ever purchased is my 1/4 battery impact Makita.

They to a 1/4 impact wrench? Only thought they did 3/8

So I bought an MX5, Mk2.5 Sport so it comes with a slip diff and Bilstein suspension and I absolutely love it.

However the intention was always to start upgrading bits and bobs for the track.

First up is an Exedy stage 1 clutch as the one on it is slipping so that arrived today and is getting fitted by my mates RAC approved garage.

I've bought myself a Haynes manual to learn a bit more about doing other stuff to it such as brakes and a new radiator which look fairly straightforward.

However due to being offered a very good deal on another few parts I've pulled the trigger and ordered something silly. Am I being stupid to even think about installing them myself? My optimistic self says it's just a case of taking my time and following instructions, a bit like when I decided to build my first PC.

This is what is on its way from America...... http://store.kraftwerksusa.com/supercharger-systems/sport-compact/kraftwerks-miata-1088.html

By all accounts as the MX5 1.8 engine is basically a turbo engine without the turbo you are ok up to about 250 bhp without internal work. I shouldn't be getting near that with the set up I'm using.

I was just about to go into war and peace about attempting something quite so daunting on your first go and was smply going to remind you a thing about aftermarket parts

NOTHING EVER FITS.... EVER..

But I see you (or actually and more luckily the garage) has just found that out.

Good luck with getting it finished, just one word of advice, don't get hung up on "it's supposed to be finished today" because that date will never arrive.
Just keep at it, overcome each issue as you find it (there will be more) and eventually, if you have the right people working on your car you will eventually get something back that you can go hoon in. :D

Funny you say that....got another call today.

The wideband had turned up so they'd gone back to stripping the electrics out from the kit so it was ready to do the ECU which turned up @ 5pm today. The injector connections aren't standard, they have some weird custom connection on them from the supercard...

He was just going to snip the wires off the supercard and splice them into the loom, but then had the realisation that if i was sending it all back they would probably get upset about bare wires hanging off the card.

Quick call to my importer who thought about it for a couple of mins and just said "Whatever happens with Kraftwerks you'll get money back from all this, even if we have to take the hit, so just use the connectors off the supercard."

So for the 2nd week running i'll be going for an interview with nothing else on my mind but "Will i be driving home via most of Northumberland?" He seemed fairly confident that it should be done though.

I didt know that. What is the standard power output? 120bhp?

yes the do. All you need is a hammer a big lever bar and gas

140bhp in the book.

The claimed result from the kit is 190 at the wheels, i don't know what the transmission losses are, but if you say 16% then that's 225 at the crank.

Yes, yes i would get the spanners out :) I shall be watching this one with interest. The mx5 was literally made to do mad stuff to, didn't some fella on here have a utterly mad charged mx5?

You missed the update! I left the spanners in the toolbox, earned some more money doing what i know how to do, which is building spreadsheets not cars, and got some people with FI MX5 experience to do it, luckily for me...

poor show, I didn't read the whole thing but sounds like it could be fun :) what is it like now?

edit: ok I should really read threads

I think the 'nothing ever fits.........ever' post above sums things up sadly :(

There must be lots of examples out there where the vendor swears blind it all fits perfectly only to find it doesn't for one reason or another.

The example I had in mind was the turbo kit my brother built up onto a Suzuki Hayabusa, can't remember half the things he had to adjust/modify/ditch but an obvious one was one of the ally pipes from turbo outlet up to the plenum needed a frame spar cutting away to allow it to line up. He's a very experienced capable bike builder and it still took him a lot of time to sort it all properly.

Hope it all works out in the end :)
