I have a samsung f1 and am wondering whether or not to rma.

After its been running for a few hrs the drive starts chirping / squeaking softly like it needs to be oiled, if i leave the computer on overnight i will sometimes get up to it crashed (lights on computer flashing nothing working have to manually shut down) and (although not sure this ones related) if i put the computer to sleep it wakes up after a minute or two.

mainly the squeaking noise is my concern. does ur drive chirp like a bird? should i put up and shut up or send it back? (the drive is about 3 minths old)

depends on the size? for the cost of a 320GB drive (if it is that one) is it worth arsing around with? cos personally, i would just buy a replacement, if its the 1TB version then yeah i would send it back.

I have a couple of 1TB F1s and, apart from a sort of brief metallic "scraping" noise as they're powering down (which is a characteristic of the model), they're very quiet indeed. Definitely no chirping or squeaking, at least beyond the normal seek noises.

The crashing might be something unrelated, but you do need to check out the drive as a first step in any case. ESTool is what you need (don't use the other Samsung utility HUTIL with an F1, it's not entirely compatible in spite of what it says on the website).

Squeaking noises are friction in bearings, that may go away or more likely not. It might show up in SMART if it's affecting drive function and causing crashes. If it does it all the time I would RMA it.

I had a Seagate drive that did this, sent Seagate a note and they told me it was normal but as I had 2 of the same drives and the other didn't chirp I didn't quite believe them. The chirping drive lasted for a year before it started going downhill and then eventually failed but Seagate weren't interested till their SeaTools software reported an error.
