However you earn your money there is some degree of risk involved. Sure, some professions are riskier than others, but I don't think that the level of risk for being a human guinea pig is especially great.

I take a risk to get by in life. That is PART of life. I would not willingly undertake in some experiement where the side-effects are yet unknown and potentially detrimental. My health means more to me than that.

The side effects would not have been entirely unknown. This clinical trial may have been in it's early stages in terms of testing on humans, but overall, it would have been through a lot before reaching this stage. However, they would only have had computer models for possible effects and reactions of taking it, this side effect may well have been known about, but considered to be highly unlikely. Animal testing may not have been done (I don't know about the particulars of this case), because nowadays for some types of drug it is often more accurate to carry out simulations on a computer.
