I've been offered a '04 BMW E46 320D Coupe M Sport (Gun Metal Grey), which has 107k on the clock, still drives beautifully, as it's been well maintained.

It's currently my brothers, who wants my Mk4 Tdi Golf (2000) + £3200, in return.

I think my Golf is worth at least £1500, only has 108k on the clock, which as many as you know, isn't much for that engine.

Does anybody own the BMW mentioned? What's it like to live with?

p.s. He needs the cash and something relativelty cheap to maintain, hence the proposal.

I think your 1500 value might be a bit ambitious - but then again it looks like his might be the same, overall you nothing know the exact history of both cars which can be worth a lot in itself. Have the swirl flaps been sorted on the e46?

Well, it's certainly at an age and mileage where things that can go wrong, generally will start to, unless of course it's had them addressed already.

At that mileage I'd be budgeting for a turbo, possibly a clutch (unless it's an auto?), and certainly a bush refresh for the suspension (if not most of the rest of the suspension too).

My 330d turbo managed to hang on until 160,000 miles, but that's by far and a way exceeding the norm.

Yes, flaps have been removed. The car was owned by my next door neighbours, the chap is a Mechanic, who did look after it very well.

Yep, it's an Auto. Like I say, I've driven it plenty, drives sweet as a nut for a car with that amount of mileage.

Have had a quick gander on Auto Trader, similar E46's go for about £5500ish, they seem to hold their value quite well..

Sort of answered your own question there. Is something going/likely to go wrong that he knows about? :o

If there isn't any problems then I suppose it could be a decent enough trade as long as you know that running costs won't be the same as a mk4 golf. ;)

Guess so.

Really like the motor, so will most likely go for it - and dare I say it, the mileage shouldn't really be an issue for that engine, which I know has been well maintained.

If there is anything else that I should look out for, that other E46 ownders with a similar model know of, that would be great :D

The engine will be absolutely fine, it's everything that bolts onto it, Turbo isn't going to be cheap in the slightest, cooling system may be a weak point if its not been done.

I know he is your brother and hopefully wouldn't rip you off...but why does he want to downgrade to the golf??

Sorry should have read the op properly!!

If he is in need of cash, offer him your car plus £3k. Nice upgrade for you for not much money!

No different to his TDI...anything could go wrong on that which could cost just as much.
