Wounded Iraqi gets £2Million...

I agree that our soldiers do not get enough compensation, however comparing this to cases of injured soldiers isn't entirely fair. As that article states, this is an exceptional case. I trust the MoD when they say this will not set a precedent.

When our lads fighting there get a max of £285,000.

Yes it's a shame the young Iraqi got paralysed, but it's a war-zone and **** happens. Nevermind, come over and sue us...

UK's gone stark raving mad.

This is a civillian shot and left paralysed because of someones incompetence. Someone fighting in a war being shot is completley different. Reasonable amount imo. And I bet you would do the same. I wouldn't be best pleased if someone invaded my country and shot me.

I agree, the civillian doesnt choose to be there in a war zone whereas UK and US troops chose to join the army therefor chose to be there.

Thats very true but no matter what job your doing and if you get injured to the extent that you will never work or perhaps walk again ( or lose other limbs) im sure you'd want a hell of a lot more than £285,000 to see you through the rest of your life.

He's a civilian; they're soldiers. He's not supposed to be shot at; they're there to be shot at. Viva la difference.

OK, let's just say that to our soldiers and tell them they can't have any compensation at all. Happy now?

UK's gone stark raving mad.

The UK was sane at some point?

yeah, around-about the victorian age. :D

Considering that the Victorians managed to build an empire and generally improve the nation through a series of technological breakthroughs and social reforms, while 20th Century Britain managed to lose an empire and generally **** the entire nation up... yes, I think you may have a point there.

I'm surprised he got anything at all. I mean, if he'd purposefully been shot as a wrong target, then yeah, sure, give him compensation. But in this case, the soldier didn't do anything than mishandle and drop his gun, which landed and fired a shot, that accidentally hit this Iraqi. It was an accident, that bullet could have hit anyone or nobody equally. Why is he getting so much?

Accidents normally pay out the most amounts.

Anyway :
2 million = paralysed forever
or
£0 = not paralysed

I know what I'd choose.

Look at the Ogden Table, the Claimant's life expectance, his age when the injury happened, the severety of the injury.

Yes £2 million sounds about right, you have to factor in a lot od things.

Care and assistance - This will be a big chunk as he'll need C&A for the rest of his life
Living costs
Food
Travel costs
Wheelchair - new one at a regular interval
Housing
Potential ? This varies from person to person
Psychatriac trauma as well as physical trauma

That is all on top of his actual physical injuries.

I think you'll find that 20th Century Germany/Japan might have had a hand in that!

You forgot the USA, they used political bargaining before, during and after both world wars to take away influence from GB and the rest of Europe. Like tokens for help in the war effort, you give us a base here and we will do this, or you pull out of this country and we will do this. The USA which had never had any kind of empire decided Europe was too strong to have so much influence over such a large part of the planet when all European's ever do is fight over everything. When the wars came along it was a perfect time for the USA to provide helping hands to coutries in need and in return gain influence and take away from European states the empires that stopped the USA building its own influence accross the world. The USA also gave away so much to the Russians after WW2 against the will of GB which in effect helped kick start the cold war.

Well according to the article he now lives in the UK now, so I guess we are already paying for this stuff.
