WoW advice

Start on a P.V.E server, that'll give you chance to get to grips with the game without having to worry about been duffed up by players who are a lot higher level than you.

As for Characters, create an Horde character. I started off with a human warrior that I got to about lvl 32 but found there to be a lot of immature players. Rolled an Orc Warrior on the Draneor server and haven't looked back

I agree. PVP servers are awful for ganking, and it can make it almost impossible to quest, especially around level 30 when it's hard to avoid an area they decided to dump a level 60 raid instance into.

Don't bother with any UI mods to start with, I only use very basic ones and I've had no problems with them.

You might struggle with Alliance if you are going to be grouped, as there aren't as many quests at a low level, and basically you don't get enough experience to level just from the places you are sent (unless you play a night elf, for some odd reason). I've always found it more easier to level a horde character because there are so many quests in the Barrens from level 10-25.

well ive been out and bought the game, just while we where there of course, i didnt suggest the whole furniture shopping trip to hide the fact i wanted a new game :D

I will be starting off helping my bro-in-law out, seems he is on the Azsune server and is Alliance. Give it a month of play and i will either look datamonkey up or experiment with the different sides.

I find naturally that in games i bend myself to fill the void in a team, im a great support player as im very proactive.

Any suggestions on character?

Everybody hates paladins, but they are a good jack of all trades. They have very high defense and health so they last ages. They can do ok damage and can also heal meaning you can fill in for a priest if they run out of mana etc.

On the trial I played as an Orc shaman (horde) and absolutely hated it :(

Shamans best character imo. I have a level 60 and find it great fun, all the other classes i dont find quite as enjoyable. There isnt another mail wearing spell casting meleeing healer. You have a druid who can heal and cast and melee but not at the same time and a paladin who can melee, wear mail / plate and heal but not spell cast.

I would suggest going for a druid if you can, however night elf's are a bit cut off for the first few levels. Druids are an excellet hybrid class, as they can be a healer role, dps role or tank role.

He already said he was playing alliance...

I've said it lots of times, but I still think the best way to find out what you like is to try out different things yourself. If you like to be support, then I'd probably try a healing class first (priest, druid or paladin). Hunters and mages do a lot of damage and are quite good at surviving solo. I've got a warlock/hunter duo going with my boyfriend which is just crazy damage, but warlocks aren't great solo because they start to get hit and die.
I'd recommend both of you going the same race (or gnome/dwarf) to start with, as otherwise you'll have to do quite a bit of walking to find each other.

What class is your bro-in-law? Personally I find this a bit boring but if you go warrior-priest you'll find it a lot easier to get through the high end instances. Priests always seem to be a void in my teams :p

And any I do see appear to be complete prats :( I was doing DM a while ago and the one we had refused to heal!

WARNING:

Playing wow will result in loss of life (as in you won't go outside for like..ever).

It's no better than crack basically.

Play a paladin then

If you're thinking about playing the game to the level cap (it doesn't matter if you plan to, you will ) and you want to heal, I'd suggest rolling a paladin, as all you will do end-game is heal but you can also be a good PvP healer/support class unlike priest that dies in 2 seconds.

i have to massively disagree with some of the above:

server wise, pvp > pve every time

ganking and getting ganked is part of the game - ive 120 days /played on my main, and the things i look back on and enjoyed the most, were beiong followed around STV by a group of higher levels in my mid 30's and managing to evade them and get away. ganking isn't as big a problem as people make out, and you're relatively safe till the mid to late 20's anyway.

on your char:

if you want to heal, the choices (ally side ofc) would be pally/druid/priest

id say in terms of fun factor, your probably looking at something like priest > druid > pally

i know a lot of people disapointed in the paladin class, yes they can be great support, but the can't deal damage in comparison with others.

druids are great - form switching and whatnot is great fun to play - a skilled druid is technically unkillable, though, you dont see that many :P

priest - awesome - id certainly suggest rolling one. top-notch healing, and can also deal damage on par with other classes. certainly one of the most feared classes to come up against (behind warlocks >_>), and great fun to play.

grab it asap, and go pvp server and roll priest - you certainly wont regret it.

Paladins got quite a boost in the new exspansion have now got a snare slowing skill and a instant holy mortal strike kind of thing and some new good talents and skills. He said he's looking forward to owning in pvp, he could before but it wasn't 100% but now he thinks he can hold his own and kill faster.

True v1bez,

I myself have a 60 Human Paladin and have found the expansion will make our class viable in other areas than healing in end-game PvE.

PvP wise we will do even better, though a lot of classes have also got something new to bring with them, particularly spell casters who need to be hit with the nerf bat (and you all know it).

So yes at the moment leveling a Paladin is not something i would reccomend. When the expansion comes outs, roll a Blood Elf Paladin and go and enjoy a great hybrid class (Healing/Tanking/DPS but mostly supporting those who can do all 3 better aka Priests/Warriors/Any other class!).

well ive jumped in as a priest to start with, 3 hours gameplay and level 6.

I did have a trial a few months ago and im sure i got the opportunity to choose a second class as well as my main one, or am i thinking of guildwars?

Would not say they die in 2 seconds, Inner Fire and Power Word: Sheild give them a lot more punch, make them a human and add the Desperate Prayer to the equation, and Renew.

Your basically taking down someone with 3500 HP, 2400 armour and the ability to deal quite good damage.

Holy spec, fear me in PVP. ;)

Glad you went for the best healer in the game! Just make yourself a Holy/Disc build and youll get groups no trouble, I would recommend Holy spec, I get about 10 instance invites a hour when playing and its great fun just dishing out 20,000 hp of heals to a party of just warriors. :D

I wouldn't recommend this for leveling at all. I have a level 60 priest who has been holy spec for the last year and it is awful trying to do anything on my own. In fact, for that reason I leveled a mage on the same server, and now if I need any drop items or money, I use the mage to get it. I'm going to have to fork out 10g to respec when the expansion comes out, because otherwise getting to 70 will take me forever.

Shaman could counter that easily.

Use purge to dispel 2 buffs at a time, so renew, power word: sheild and inner fire. Then use earth shock to stop them casting any heals or dmg spells then just melee them to death tbh :p

Edit: Not forgetting grounding totem to absorb one damage spell and tremor totem to dispell fear :D

thanks for securing my belief that shamans are a ridiculous overpowered class.
