WoW newbie question - What exactly is a raid?

I'd rather have my nuts twisted off than go on another 40 man raid. Tedious repetition for hours on end.

The fact is, these instances aren't hard. Everyone has a very simple (boring) job to do. The trick is getting everyone to do their very simple task correctly. It's a test of communication - and not the dynamic/adapting/interesting kind you'd find in, say, a fps clan match. It's more like to trying to get 500 people to sit down on the count of 3.

'is that on 3, or 3 then sit'??
'what number was that again'?
'i need to go to bed, school tomorrow'
'why are only half of you sitting'??!!
'aarrghghg, wipe'!

That is one of the best analogys I have ever seen to discribe raiding, THB it discribes most instance running in MMOs after the first few times through when you work out the "number you have to count to"

Its amazing how stupid a raid group can be.

Despite the negative aspects portrayed, when teamspeak and a good guild community raids, its also a way for 40 people to get together and try and get new gear, enjoy instances they couldnt without each other, and with the above things,a good chance to get together, chat, and have a laugh, I know I've had some great fun in some of the raids I've been with, its the people you go with that make it, and I think the community get together aspect is a lot of the problem, a lot of people forget it and go with stronger people who they dont necessarily get on well with to get loot, whereas half the point of raids and wow, is to work together with larger groups, and with the right tools can be a nice little online social thing.

Agreed though, the amount of stupidity you get where idiots cant follow simple instructions can be VERY frustrating, but the raids can also be a lot of fun. Its all in who you raid with, and the atmosphere.

Just what i was wondering !

Endgame raids with 40 people can ofc be incredibly fun if you're in a good guild with people you know /get on with / njoy talking to etc.

We've just gained a bunch of new people in my guild on Draenor and its good re-learning a few bosses with people who've not done them and getting to know some other people.

It can be a lot of fun, but unfortunately a lot of people take it far too seriously. I joined a new guild with my mage, and they were only just starting to do 20 man instances as there weren't many level 60s. I had loads of fun with them because everyone was learning together and trying things that suited us all, and even joined up my priest because they only had 1 and it was frustrating that we weren't killing things purely due to lack of healing.

Then they got some arrogant idiot who decided to take over, and what was a lot of laughing in vent turned into everyone being shouted at and told to "shut up" etc. He went for the "I've used this tactic before, so it's right" approach, and it suddenly became a great chore.

Unfortunately I've never found a guild that isn't driven by desire for power and greed once they start getting into MC and Onyxia :(.

your story is so familiar, sadly once you reach (end)endgame, as in clearing instances like AQ, we got to the point where everything was basically dead on reset day, repetitive, and boring. Well it was fun getting to that stage anyway! enjoy! :p

Raid:

You spend hours fighting beasties to get to the end bosses, on route the whole party gets wiped out a few times, lots of shouting and noob calling ensues, you finally kill the end bosses after what seems like an eternity, then you roll on the uber items that dropped and don't win any, you curse at your computer then you swear never to go on a raid again.

Not forgetting leaving the guild :p

They do ZG aswell, which is even worse. But you can't do BWL until you've mastered MC, then you need to master BWL before AQ and then Naxx.

Of course, its all pointless now, because when BC comes out, MC and BWL will be rendered mostly useless as the level 70 quest items will be as good or better than anything that drops from there, and Naxx and AQ will be a walkover as everyone will be level 70

You'll still have to know what you're doing in those instances, you couldn't just get a group of people together and zerg it just because you're level 70. Try that on C'thun and the entire raid is one-shotted, no matter how much stamina you have, and if you can even reach him without tactics and experience.
