WoW Performance - slowdown in cities

I get some slowdown when I first enter a city (mostly in ogrimar or ironforge) but once ive been in there a minute or two it speeds back up to normal.

its prob because you have 2gb of ram, i also get slow down with an e6600 stock and an 8800gtx xxx, im also on 2gb of ram, mine normals slows a bit then after a few seconds all it fine

No, Wow peaks at ~ 500MB RAM usage. EDIT - To justify this, I didn't mean to imply WoW would only ever use 500MB, just that I happened to check randomly and that was the peak it reported to me at the time.

Would the number of character skins that have to download and pop up not be part of the cause of the framerate hit?

I wonder if it is network-related in some way. So many players = lots of non-predictable movement to update across many systems. Something like the code in Quake, where players with higher fps caps could jump further because of how the game / network code was done. Presumably, it must be more bandwidth intensive to update non-predictable player movement @ 100fps than 30 - 40.

Are you sure? You'd be surprised how much memory WoW can use.

This isn't even peak, I just randomly checked my Task Manager whilst playing.

If you have 1.5GB and above of memory you typically shouldn't have that many issues with WoW. It's worth noting that I have 4GB of memory running at over 1Ghz and still get relatively low FPS in major cities, it's just a lot of work for the CPU and GPU to do on the fly. Busy cities typically have dozens of people running all over.

Can't say I have any fps problems in WoW not even in towns, get around 50-100 fps in Shatrath, 100-200 fps in Ironforge and Stormwind.

The best way to see if it's a memory issue is to check your peak commit charge in task manager if it's over the amount of physical RAM you have installed then you need more RAM.

I lose fps in cities also but it doesn't effect the game in anyway for me.

If you want improved graphics by the way, make a macro of the below text and put it on your quickbar and press it then quit and log back on and it will take effect. The most noticable change is viewing distance.

/console farclip 777
/console horizonfarclip 6226
/console groundeffectdensity 256
/console groundeffectdist 140
/console smallcull 0
/console skycloudlod 3
/console characterambient 0

does this make any difference if your running the game on max everything?

i tried it but cant notice anything different

The main difference if you're running everything on max is the ground objects like grass etc are more dense, you can see the mountains in the distance from much further, e.g from Aldor rise you can see the mountains of skettis.

Makes a huge difference.

In fact, if you macro that, as well as the macro for the default settings, click one then the other. You'll see the environment change before your eyes.

I'll show you:

Maximum settings, default console variables:

This seems to have wrecked the colour in instances (well SM anyway) everything looks greyish. Any ideas what the settings are to change it back?

I bet the killerNIC would actually improve WoW FPS a lot, if I remember correctly from reviews it actually did?

Not even joking

Thanks to the Killer NIC, World of Warcraft received an astonishing boost in both ping and FPS."

FPS gained is from the windows stack no longer being able to issue pause commands to your video card when it is pegged with large volumes of incoming network traffic.
