WoW - Should i..?

Don't start WoW.. according to xfire I played it for 5000 hours+, I can't even believe it myself.

I quit about a month ago and it was the best thing I did for a long time.

Will never play a MMO again.

always amazes me how bias and unfair people are towards WoW.

the games doesnt make YOU, YOU make it what you want.

if you want to spend 16+ hours a day on it then thats YOU doing it not the game.

i play about 4-5 hours a week while im at uni IF that. while im at home for a holiday its probably about 10 hours a week and i still aways make time for my social life.

its a great game at the end of the day.

I found it great until you reach the max level(which was 60 when I played)then unless you have a spare 4-6hours each night do the raids then I wouldnt bother. You could spend 6hours playing and at the end of it get nothing.

In response to the above. If you only play 4 to 10 hours a week. Is it really worth the £8.99 a month fee for that?

When you do eventually leave then you will think about the waste of time and money it all was. At the end of the day, your life is your life!

Like I said earlier, it's digital heroin.

You'll first start to play it just to waste some time and relax a bit. Then you will start wanting to play it while you aren't at your PC and think about it all the time. Then you start neglecting your friends/job/college/uni to play it instead. Then you are in the cycle of log on - 16 hours - log off - sleep - log on - 16hours....

Then you realise that you have wasted 5000hours + of your life on NOTHING.

I'm not going to say it's a bad game, it's obviously quite a brilliant one. However the way Blizzard and other MMO devs make the game is to keep you coming back for more, like a drug dealer/pusher. I'd stay clear if you have an ounce of common sense, I've put up with it for 3 years of mates on vent saying "GET WOW", always reply with "**** off, I don't want to be permanantly signed in like you guys"

You could say the same about drugs though.

You may have the most self-discipline in the World but thats the exception to the norm. For most people the attraction of spending "just a little more time" working on getting the next level, "one more raid", etc overrules common sense and ends up dominating their life.

Plus the fact in the grand scheme of things it's a huge waste of time and energy which you have nothing to show for (other than digitally, which can be taken away at any time).

EDIT: Fubar hit the nail on the head.

Depends how you classify 'wasted'. If I have spare time, I'd far, far rather spend it playing WoW than on an evening of viewing Emmerdale, Eastenders, Coronation Street, and then whatever other bland pap happens to be on. It's when WoW stops you doing something constructive (studying) or socialising, that's you need to worry.

Agree :)

OK since I have played this for over 2 years I can give an opinion on this.

It is very, very addictive. I have quit for good recently as it was effecting my personal life, the fiancee etc. It is a good MMO but there is a catch, it is an endless grind and to grind to be the best requires a guild which is a large number of people playing together. Guilds are very strict if it is end game you are doing (I was raiding end game).

You begin thinking get to level 70, you get 70 and you think now what? you pvp grind or grind trash (non instance monsters (usually for reputation) or instance grind. WoW is a grind and if you want to be the best and are competitive then you will be hooked on it.

There is a lot of drama in World of Warcraft also due to this competition and with so many people there can be lots of arguing and cusssing, people have been killed over this game in extreme circumstances.

If you like RPGs stick to RPGs I dont belive MMOs are a good idea as they just tend to be grind/patch/grind/more content/grind/grind and throw in some drama.

If MMO wasn't a grind and things were even somehow then WoW would be great, but its not and that isn't how MMO's work today.

Also remember you are paying £10 a month to basically grind on this game.

Generic Anti-WoW "i quit and im so glad" response.

Only way to know about this game is to try it for yourself. Everbody hold's such a strong opinion on it, you cant let them decide for you.

I'm sureyou can get 10 day trials or something. Check the website. www.wow-europe.com

a lot of people here saying you become a hermit basically but I disagree. You are socialising while playing WoW, just not with people you see face to face to often. Depends what you class as socialising really. a lot of good friendships have been made in WoW so to say its anti-social is not right.

I used to play a lot with people on WoW I have never met but I class them as friends. We now all quit WoW because of the time it involves and moved onto TF2 but we are still altogether. That to me is more social than sitting infront of the TV watching rubbish.

If your speaking on TS or ventrilo or using IRC, MSN or whatever then your socialising imo.

Some people actually only play this game for the social side of things. Is there really that much difference between talking to people on WoW to talking to people up the pub? Could make for an interesting debate...........

Yep, I know people who just log in and sit outside Aldor\IF bank and just chat to friends.

It is addictive, like anything else can be to be totally honest. The way I look at it is, as long as I wouldn't have done anything more constructive with that time if I wasn't logged in, then it's ok for me to log in. Unfortunately at the moment that means logging in at the moment as I have absolutely no money, and nothing going on at the moment. I don't mind though, as I consider a lot of people in my guild to be real friends, some of whom I've now known for years.

Just get a month's subscription and give it a go. No amount of being told how great/bad/addictive it is is going to match up to actually having played it yourself.

I aggree with Nullvoid

The game is realy good, fun to play if some of your friends play WoW you can talk to them.

You may find that when u ding 70 u get bored as theres a lot of grinding to do lol

Raids are fun some ppl dont like em and go for pvp which is even more funny when u "pwn" some1 with full t6 gear and u have t5 arena gear :P

Also i think when *** new patch comes out lvl20 - 60 is around 30% faster i think so that will make it less boring lol :p

It's definitely the easiest MMORPG ever to get into (that's why there are over 9 million subscribers of it, most of which probably never even heard of Blizzard before it was released I bet :p)

There's 4 basic things that happen though.

1. Make a character, level it to 70.
2. Get into Player vs. Player battles OR
3. Enter dungeons with 4-24 other people against the AI.
4. Re-roll (basically means make a new character and level that to 70 instead)

There's things in-between such as finding ways to earn money, improving your character's looks/gear and playing the economy, most of which you can do 'solo'.

Also this guy did a huge survey from Blizzard's Armory that shows you the most popular Races/Classes. There's roughly a 60-40 split between the two factions (Alliance and Horde respectively) with a lot more people on PvP-oriented servers.

I'd advise going on a regular PvP server, they are more active, have more skilled players and very good in-game economies. You will get killed from time to time by bored level 70s when you are levelling but that's the risk of playing on a PvP server, members of each faction can attack everyone of the other faction 99% of the time.

Really, I don't see why people get so addicted to it. I played it for 2ish months & I never got addicted.

Did any of your mates play with you? I find it's the competition between real life friends that gets me hooked more than anything else.

lol @ the idiots saying you will get addicted and lose their life, just like they did. Well guess what. that's your fault, your weakness, your problem, not the game.

I have been playing WoW since release and I only play it a few hours a week now and still get immense enjoyment from it (Arena for the win).

Maybe you should stay away from alcohol too, because you MIGHT get addicted to that, and it'll ruin your life. (If you're a weak minded, weak willed idiot that is, as most people seem to be on this forum).

And if you're having fun, it's not a waste of time. What are you saying exactly? That recreational activites are a waste of time? You sit down and watch a football match for example, at the end you have NOTHING to show for it. Was that a waste of time? If you had fun and enjoyed it, no it wasn't. It's the same with WoW. There's hundreds of things people do on a daily basis that have no actual reward other than fun/pleasure, they're not a waste of time. Seriously think about what you are saying.
