Hi there,

My daughter wants a new PC to play WoW on, she has a budget of £300.

Her old PC is a EI System 5025 which is pretty low spec, 256mb ram, 2.53Ghz P4 processor and a radeon R96A which is a 128MB graphics card.

So two choices, either upgrade the old one if it's worth it, or buy a complete system (pre-built or parts, not bothered.)

Thanks in advance.

Hi Prestonian.

I don't think it would be worth upgrading, you are looking at a full overhaul unfortunately.

The good news with an AMD APU Trinity set up you should come in very close to your budget.

The question is, what do you need?

Do you need any of the following in addition to the hardware itself? - Monitor/Mouse/Keyboard/Case/Operating system. Any of those items will cut into the budget.

Somthing like this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX) £95.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) HDD £47.99
1 x MSI A55M-E33 AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £40.99
1 x Antec High Current Gamer 400W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £40
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TXD38G2133HC11DC01) £39.95
1 x Xigmatek Helios XTK231 Mini Tower Case - Black £24.98
Total : £302.50 (includes shipping : £10.50).

The CPU has inbuilt graphics which will run well with the fast RAM so no need for a graphics card, this can keep costs low. I know the case isn't great, but it's only just over £300.

Just operating system unless there's free ones out there that can play the game?

Do you not have one you can use already? XP, Vists...

You could download the Win7/8 trial version if it's still available. If you added one to your budget, you'll be closer to £400.

Can you run games using Linux?

I've got a W7 disc but the key is registered to my PC. I suppose you're limited to one key per PC as opposed to one key per household?

If its a pre build system from a pc company its normally tied to that system so a new os would be needed. As for spec that pc that snips put up would run wow at moderate settings nonproblem :-)

If you still have the serial number, located on a sticker on the side of the case, you could transfer it when you call to re-activate!

I registered my previously registered win7 on a second brand new build. Worth a try if nothing else :)

What OS does your daughters PC currently have? Could you not reuse the key from there? Just an idea :)

It's got Windows 7, but has a sticker for XP Home, so I don't know. My brother gave her it after her old old one bit the dust.

By the way, I'm sorry to waste everyones' time, but I think we can raise the bar slightly on the budget if it's going to noticeably improve performance.

Her main game is WoW but I know she'd like to play DayZ. Is that achievable if we add £80-£100 to the budget?

tried that.. if its made by a manufacturer they wont allow it as its tied to them as they buy bulk licences!

You could always go with replacing the HDD! Just feed them some bull to get it sorted, like you had no choice!

Yes, if you go with the Trinity build and add Win 7/8 as the OS:

You should have no issues with Day-z also, it's not a well coded game graphics wise. Can't see it being to strenuous!

With a tight budget the above is probably your best bet, the good news is, in the future you can just drop in a discreet GPU for better performance.
