Hello was wondering if someone could help me I W anted to do an extension on my semi detached property. A wrap around my next door is detached. My driveway is 2.5M and I wanted to go up the boundary is this possible ? Also my neighbour has a side window which I will be blocking if I did the double storey extension . Do you think I will get permission?
I’m not good at explaining I have attached photos which may help to understand what I am saying.

Would your new extension introduce a factor that would reduce your neighbours enjoyment of their property? ie. would blocking his window reduce his enjoyment of his property? If so then you would be creating a nuisance and your application would be denied.

From what you’ve described I dint think you’d get approval. But it depends on local planning regs really.

Thank you for your reply. The only thing it would be blocking is that window but she has another window on the front so light shouldn’t be a problem. Only thing you can see through the window is my big shed at the moment and my side of my house. She only has a 90cm pathway between her window and my shed/fence

I very much doubt you'd get permission. There were enough concerns about windows and light on our double storey side extension, and we still have a 3m drive between the edge of the extension and the next door property. Similarly we had a garage there previous but its only single storey as I assume your shed is, not double storey as your extension would be.

I asked a fairly similar question earlier last week and was told the opposite. Go figure.

That's not the test that's applied. Would a reasonable person think that your extension would reduce or interfere with that persons right to enjoy their property? If it would (and I think blocking a window would reduce my enjoyment of that window in particular) then you have (inadvertently) created a nuisance and permission would be denied on that basis.

Having reviewed your thread I disagree they are similar. As far as I can tell your neighbours are planning to build out from an existing wall, reducing your view by less than 0.5m. It's hardly the same thing as completely blocking someone's side window with a brick wall.

This post is suddenly more specific than your first post in this thread:

I hadn't seen your thread and I simply applied the same 'man on the Clapham omnibus' test and if you look at what is proposed in your thread (which is significantly more detailed in itself) it's clear they are very different. In your situation you already have a building which will come about 50cm closer to you because they are closing up the gap.

In the OP's post he's going to build a brand new brick wall right in front of a side window.

Not the same thing. But feel free to use the 'reduces my enjoyment of my property' argument in your submission to your planning department.

The difference is your neighbor's is just a rear extension, which a lot of the time doesn't even need planning as can fall under permitted development. Side extensions seem to be a lot more frowned upon.

You can check up on rules for extensions on the government's planning portal. That will allow you do decide what you can or can't do.
