just wondering if anyone uses those anti static wrist straps when messing around inside their pc's? and do overclockers sell them? i've only seen them at places like ahh competiters, err those electronics kinda stores.

nah i dont, but i usually have something plugged in thats earthed, save a dvd player and then before i handle stuff i just touch one of the screws on the dvd case just to get rid of anything then ya should be fine.

but what happens when (as is often the case) low power electrics aren't actually earthed ;) (a lot of DVD players etc are double insulated thus don't have an earth connected).

I personally use either an antistatic strap (often with mat) if i'm doing a full build, or if i'm just doing something quick inside the machine (such as adding a drive), i'll turn it off at the socket and keep touching the case.

i'm prolly gonna get one from a competitor for future builds, i always touch a radiator on multiple occasions while building or messing around inside a pc but that can't be as good as always being tethered to a ground i guess? are overclockers ever going to sell these?

On my last build (which was actually my first build so I was extra cautious:p) I was always touching the radiator through out the build. And also the case of another rig which was connected to the mains.

The floor was laminated wood so I guess that reduced the static build up compared to carpet.

Had no problems:D

Considering the state of many older house's wiring and earth spike, I'd rather run the risk of frying some ram than being a failed washing machine's path to earth.

I Generally don’t use one when working on PCs these days, such as my own.

Back in the mid 80's when a disk controller cost £250+ and a 10MB drive around £500 then I always used one. Saying that modern components seem to be less susceptible to static than in the past. Although it is best practice to use one.

When I am at work installing more costly kit such as modules for our switches at £500 a time then I generally still do.

I only use them when I'm at work in the datacentre, all sun servers come with these cheap paper ones in the box and its better than frying a brand new Sun T-2000 server.
