Evening fellas,

Few questions I was hoping you might help me with,

Those are my test results, on the left the slightly better results are with write back cache enabled, my first question is do I want it enabled. (obviously the performance is a tiny bit better but I do not know how much this increases the risk of problems).

When I bought these drives (Two OCZ Vertex II's Pre-Sandforce) they were supposed to have 250MB/s "sustained" read AND write speed each, so these two in RAID0 in their prime should have been putting down at least 400 Read/Write (maybe??)

My second question is Are my drives performing at their best?, The sequential read looks great to me for two drives that are a few years old 392-395 MB/s but the write speed looks utter rubbish 84-100MB/s.

When I bought these they were the only SSD to advertise a sustained write speed the same as the read speed, From what I see in those tests mine are currently 1/4th (apprx) not equal.

Either they have slowed down a lot over the last couple of years (the write more so than the read) or the advertised speeds are rubbish and the write was never as good as the read. OR I haven't set my hard drives up properly.

Gigabyte EX58-Extreme, AHCI/RAID ENABLED

Updated: SSD firmware, Intel RST Drivers

Is there anything else I should be looking at setting/driver wise?

And finally what is the most current RST driver that is compatible with my X58 system, I read on a forum 11.7 so thats what I currently have installed and I didn't attempt to install the most current one on Intel's site which is 12.9.

Thankyou, sorry for all the questions.

D.

Dunno if its applicable here but RAID mode = no TRIM = performance drops over time? (Has to spend more time looking for free chunks to write data).

use atto benchmark and see what that says

not 100% sure but I think latest rst drivers support trim in raid 0

EDIT: you'll need the latest raid orom as far as I can tell for raid0/trim,you need to modify current bios to include it

GA-EX58-Extreme Bios F13u mod
Updated with...
Intel RAID for SATA 12.6.0.1867
Realtek LAN 2.54
Jmicron RAID SATA 1.07.28

Some drives/controllers/drivers support it in RAID but don't think its supported in most configurations (though its becoming more common).

Morning!

Thankyou for all the quick replys.

But you have given me another question!

fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

disable delete notify = 0

It seems TRIM is enabled in Raid0 already, Or is that CMD line not a good way of testing if TRIM is enabled?

Do I want write back cache enabled, and Can I use the latest RST drivers or was that forum right and they are not all compatible wtih X58.

I know its a bit early for all these questions, I need a coffee!

write back cache idk,ive never messed with that,if it improves speeds then leave it disabled

as for latest rst try them and see,

Ok had a massive crash which I put down to write back being enabled so I disabled it again, I hadn't tried to install the latest RST drivers because of the compatibility issues mentioned on that forum but I took a gamble and did it and I have slightly improved test results and no ill effects.

I still think my writes are on the low side, does anyone have an opinion on that?

I suppose all in all the reads are what really matter and they seem good.

Thanks for the replys.

Enabling write-back cache shouldn't cause any issues. It keeps some data in memory (RAM) rather than flushing it to disk immediately, allowing the OS to do it at a more opportune moment.

The downside is that if your PC crashes in period between the OS caching the data and flushing it to disk, then all the data in the cache is lost.

score seem a tad low,i get a 1000 score with my 2xcrucail c300,also wazza300 is there a bio mod for my asus p6td delux to get trim working

Not sure on asus,I thinkso as its just an updated oprom best try and look on forums,I only have the gigabyte ones
