Hey guys,

I'm setting up a band project at the moment with a few mates of mine. All been playing our instruments for 3+ years (not a long time, but we're far from terrible) and are far more interested in doing our own stuff rather than covers.

I'm writing the lead and rhythm/bass guitar myself, with the drummer doing the drums. We've got a few good riffs etc, but I was wondering if you guys could give me some tips on writing. What do you do to get yourself into the mood? Do you have a technique when writing?

Also, is there any technique in writing a break down (a la Dream Theater) riff?

I'd greatly appreciate any advice anyone can give - the more view points, the better.

I like to just play until something crops up that I like, then focus on that some more. Always good to have a few friends around to improvise with as well. Certain "creative substances" can also help in my view.

I'm pretty sure there could be a "technique" for writing "breakdown" riffs, but that's not what writing music's about.

When in bands, I've always found it better to work creatively together than to try and 'write' then bring it to the band.

which is why it helps to be in a band where the other members dont have the collective creativity of a dead goat.
