Hi guys.

I've a slight problem here. A few months ago I had a HD3870x2 as my main gpu. Since then I've upgraded twice, once to a 5770 and then again to a 5850. When installing the new cards I uninstalled all of the old drivers using driver sweeper in safe mode and then installed the new drivers in the normal fashion.

I first noticed a problem when I couldnt select DX11 in Stalker. I didnt think to much of it. I recently tried Metro 2033 and I couldnt select DX11 either. So I checked dxdiag and WEI and they both show that the main gpu is the HD3870x2. However GPU-Z and GPU caps viewer both show that the main card atm is the HD5850.

I've tried uninstalling drivers, using driver sweeper and running ccleaner. Can anyone suggest anyother steps to take other than a clean install of windows?
I've googled it quite a bit but the only thing I can seem to find is that people whos current GPU is detected (HD5xxx series), but the DDI version in dxdiag is 10.1 instead of 11.

I would post a screen shot of the three programs showing what their detecting, but I cant.
Rig: Win7 64, HD5850 (cat10.3), MB:MSI DKA790gx, 4gb ocz pc-6400.

^^Above and for god sake stop using driver cleaner or the like they cause more problems than they fix. Just run the driver package and let the installer do its job. No need to remove old drivers unless you are changing from Nvidia to Ati or viceversa.:)

there's absolutely no need to run driversweeper - indeed, it seems to be a recurring theme in driver screwups.

Personally I'd bin driversweeper and just reinstall Windows from scratch - it always fixes the problem ;)

Gah. Thanks guys. Doesnt help when some people explicitly say that you should run driver sweeper anyway.

Anyhow, just got it fixed. Didnt need to reinstall windows, just run the driver install again. I feel pretty stupid now :(

May have been hasty in saying problem solved.
Upon rebooting, dxdiag has reverted to showing hd3870x2 and DDI version 10.1 instead of hd5850 with DDI version 11. Everytime I install the 10.3 drivers it updates to say the correct card and DDI.

I'm aware that there is a hotfix for this problem, but I've already installed it and rebooted to find the same thing has happened again.

Any other solutions anyone can suggest, except reinstalling windows?

I may do. Unless someone else comes up with a winning solution. I would have reinstalled sooner, but I'm lazy :P

Will probably do it tomorrow.

I had some problems after installing a game, which put it's version of directx on (gave me no choice). After installing the latest directx (feb 2010) from MS, problems sorted.

Worth a shot if you haven't already done so,
