Was this the router that supported the tomato firmware or not, i cant remember. If it is then could you please link me to where it is.

Thanks

Er, yeah:

»» Routers that are known to work with Tomato:

* Linksys WRT54G v1-v4, WRT54GS v1-v4, WRT54GL v1.x, WRTSL54GS (no USB support)
* Buffalo WHR-G54S, WHR-HP-G54, WZR-G54, WBR2-G54, WBR-G54, WZR-HP-G54, WZR-RS-G54, WZR-RS-G54HP, WVR-G54-NF, WHR2-A54-G54, WHR3-AG54
* Asus WL500G Premium (no USB support), WL500GE
* Sparklan WX6615GT, Fuji RT390W, Microsoft MN-700

This will not work on Linksys WRT54G/GS v5 or newer WRT54G/GS routers.

That would be a couple of versions earlier than the current models...

well i got mine nearly 3 years a go so it wont be the latest version :p No other way of telling what version it is :/

You see i have a slight problem doing that :/

well it looks like a WRT54G v5 (v4 is the max supported), double check with the chips etc on that site

I've got V4 of this router .. what are the advantages of me switching over to this Tomato firmware if the OEM fireware that is on it now already does all I need....??

There's not much difference between what you've got and the GL that's currently on sale, other than you can't buy a GSv4 now...

The main difference is stability (most third-party firmware has the NAT table expiry reduced, so the router should be more stable with torrenting) and extra features.

So if I am having no issues and it is working perfectly fine there is no point changing then really is there ... ?

No advantages to be had so to speak ... ?

If you don't want to change, you're not forced to...
No I'm open to change but I'm just trying to find out what the advantage would be over the firmware I already have ... the answer seems to be there won't be any advantage for what I do as far as I can see.

If routing of traffic was quicker, signal strength stronger, connection distances increased then it might be worth it but as it is I can't see any way it would benefit me.

There's an easy way to find out - try it. It's not a one way trip and if you don't like it, the Linksys firmware will install fine.

You can tweak the wireless power, which would improve the latter two, but you already said there was nothing wrong with it how it was. I doubt there's anything you can do to make the "routing of traffic" any faster either, unless you're doing something esoteric that another firmware does better.

Well thanks for the info, something to consider anyway especially when I attatch my NAS, might be a few benefits to in then but until I do sometime next week I'll leave it as it is :D

Hi

For ages I was thinking of upgrading to the Tomato firmware, and was putting it off, as stardard linksys firmware was working ok, except when there was heavy torrent use, where all other internet connections would lag very severely.

Eventually I bit the bullet and downloaded it, the most difficult part was unzipping it as I had to install another type of winzip program to handle the "7z" or 7zip format, but after unzipping I could see the firmware bin files for the various routers.

I took a deep breath and flashed my router, and to my utter surprise everything went perfectly fine.

Even better whilst it says that you must reset it to clear all the setting I never bothered and it retained every setting I had perfectly with exception of the access restriction times for the wireless connections and port forwarding, which were easy to set up again.

I have been running it for over a month now and all has been great, and torrents do not clog it up now.

However, as usual if your one is working fine and you don't need it why both to try and fix something that isn't broken :) , I always found the original firmware (with exception of the torrent problem) fine and my router went for years on end without having to be re-booted.
