Would prefer a 15inch screen but with the gfx card and overall spec this seems a really good price. The equivelent studio 15 xps with practically the same gfx hd4670 is around £800!
I know the gfx is good according to this http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4650.13883.0.html

What do you think?

Seems like a good deal mate, Dell were doing some crazy deals at christmas. I picked up my Core i7 Dell Studio 15 for £850, I got about £350 off all together.

What you using it for? Gaming or just web browsing and general use?

Yea im thinking a cheap but quality gaming laptop, something that can play FPS games at a medium quality at a decent resolution.
I was going to go for a studio 15 but the gfx of the 4570 is quite a bit behind the 4650/4670 going by the notebookcheck site reviews.
If only the option to have a 4650 in a studio 15 was available.

Hi guys I like the look of your laptop spoonjaffa. I am off to Australia for a year in april and have been looking to buy a laptop as well. I think our laptop needs are pretty similar spoon. I have just sold my ps3 and my desktop is next to go so as you can imagine I am into my gaming. I will also be doing general surfing an watching films and skyping family etc.. so nothing too strenuous. Also as I will be travelling a lot I think good battery life will be really important to me as well. So I like the look of this and while I can see it wont set the hills alight with amazing framerates i'm sure it will handle most games with dignity on medium to high settings.

So I went onto the website to check it out and I like what I see but I have made 2 upgrades to your specs which have bumped the price up to £770.

Processor: intel® Core™ i7-720QM Mobile Processor (1.6GHz, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)

and

Battery: Primary 9-cell 85 WHr Lithium Ion battery.

As this is my first ever laptop I am not that clued up on laptop components, could you guys tell me if these 2 upgrades are worth the additional £130?.

Kidbucko - I would be very weary of the i7 at the moment!
Dell are having serious issues with throttling on both the sxps 1645 and studio 1747 i7 models.

I would get the C2D model (1745) or wait for the i5 refresh with ati 5650.

I ordered a 1745 before xmas similar to the ops, after 2 months of waiting and no definate edd I cancelled. I hope Dell have improved their lead times

I looked at this one, it is such a good price.
Can you please comment on speaker/screen quality and external temps?

Speakers are very good for a laptop tbh some of the best i have heard there is a system called Tuba which uses a subwoofer to add depth it works very well.. The screen is good very bright the viewing angles could be better but you seem to get this with most laptops. External temps are good the cooling fan is noticeable but not Ott after 3 hours of MW2 it gets marginally warm to touch.

If i,m being hoinest i bought the laptop with the intentions of seeing how it was and using the 7 day return, I have never been a big fan of Acer But after a couple of days i think its one of the best laptops i have owned and i have had a few, Dell,s, sony etc..

You can also install a second hard drive in this machine, which is a bonus i have not done this myself but there is an opening on the bottom with a spare hard drive bay in.

If you would like any pictures let me know and i can upload any you want..

Thanks mate. I owned an acer 8935g but the screen was so poor I sold it. Have also been through countless Dells/Sony/HP etc.

Sounds like a winner. Are you getting on with the keyboard? I wasnt very keen on the 8935g keyboard which looks the same.
BTW if you want to install a second HD you will need an adapter which are as rare as hens teeth!

And sorry to derail the thread but there is very little info on the 7738.

The screen is ok its not anywhere as good as the one i had on my old Xps1710 that was gorgeous but its not the worst i have seen. The viewing angles are not the greatest. You need to sit infront of it to get the best out of it. There is also some artifacting when playing Blu-ray i find noticeable. I might be being over picky as i,m a plasma man and allways find lcd,s to be a bit poo..

I quite like the keyboard tbh, all the keys are flat with a gap around them works well for me.

I have found the adapter kit online for £22 I was thinking of making something up myself with an old Sata caddy i have.

Thanks MOOGLEY, yep saw the Acer Aspire 7738G as was tempted and then read some reviews about the noise of it and quality so put me off but you seem to say its pretty good compared to old laptops. I'll have a look into it again.
£550 for a gaming laptop is really good but there must be some cost savings.

I think the build quality is superb on par with any Dells i have had tbh.. It can be a bit noisy when the fan kicks in but considering the hardware its running its not that bad at all...
