wtb some advice

i currently have an intel core2 quad q8200 with 4gb of ram running windows7 64bit and a nvidia gt275 video card.

i am looking at upgrading my pc and passing down mine to my missus/son.

i have been looking at the i7 920s, but well im not really up with computers so much anymore (age? ) is this a noticeable upgrade over a q8200?

im unsure if i get the oem 920 it has no fan correct? what should i buy to keep it cool? i was thinking perhaps to run it at 3.6ghz, i dont think i need anything above that really hehe, what motherboard and what ram? i have a budget of around £500 and im very confused atm :/

to put it short,

what motherboard/cooler/ram should i get to go with a oem i7 920 with a total budget of around £500 ?

yes it will be noticeably better.

yes oem does not have fan.

to keep it cool i recommend corsair h50 + 2 Akasa AK-FN058 Apache 120 mm fans.

dont buy motherboard that costs over 200 £ as it will be waste of money if u not overclock more then 4ghz

get ddr3 6 gig triple channel memory that runs 1600mhz

If you look HERE you may find that you need to up your budget a little to a get an i7 that gives truly noticeable increase over your current rig.
This, however only gives you mobo/cpu/ram bundles, not the whole shabang.
You could just about do an i5 rig fro £500 without nicking bits from your old pc.

I'd say it is worth the upgrade if you can manage it, looking at a good £600+ to get everything you are requiring for your i7 build, so an i5 might be a better option, it still packs a fair punch if I'm not mistaken.

Depends what you're gonna use the pc really. Unless you want to do loads of apps that'll need the require the extra power/memory, I'd say keep the exisiting components and buy components that are suited to your wife's/son's needs/requirements. What you have atm is good quality already so I think the performance gains wouldn't be as great as you might assume they would be.

well the thinking is to replace mine, give mine to my missus, and hers to my son. that way everyone gets a decent upgrade : ) hehe.
