WTF Android? Where did my texts go?

OK this is the second time this has happened to me (the last was a couple months ago) and it's kinda making me wonder if it's happened to anyone else. A text message arrives, I click on the Messages app, oops, the Messages app crashes! I relaunch it, and they're all gone! Completely empty! I think hmmm maybe it's just having a hissy fit or something so I restart the phone, but nope, made no difference, still gone.

I assume the app crashed while writing into the SMS database and ended up with a corrupted file, but WTF Google? Heard of keeping 2 copies of it? Or having a "repair" function? It's nothing but a very simple database, can't be THAT complicated to repair! Is that all you can do for us? Just shrug and delete them all?

Really annoyed at these modern phone OSs, I swear even Windows CE 5 had fewer bugs. Horrible interface, slow as hell, but fewer bugs!

Has this happened to anyone else? And have you figured out a way to get them back somehow?

What phone do you have, I believe people with the HTC Desire (HD?) complained about this and seemed to think it was a HTC Software issue.

As for the software, I agree, as a developer I see such stupidly fragile designs all the time, although I would say 'keeping a copy' of the storage device isn't necessarily the answer, that has many failure modes unless handled very carefully in a robust design.

Root it and install Titainium backup. Make regular backups. Never had the issue myself.
Basically, this... You shouldn't have to, but if the data is important, back it up!

As i use MyPhoneExplorer most days my text messages get backed up into the aplication for me without worrying about backing up manually via titanium backup.

Works for me..........

SHould've said, yeah, it's a Desire Z, so it'll have more or less the same software as the HD. I have been using SMS Backup as well, but for some reason it hasn't been doing its scheduled backup in 3-4 weeks even though I've had it enabled! Typical that I only find out it hasn't been working when I need to use it eh?

Doesn't HTCSense.com work with the Desire Z? That's supposed to backup everything including text messages etc?

Actually I'm totally not sure what it backs up... there's no options either on the phone or on the website to choose which items to back up. There's a sync button in the phone app but it doesn't tell you what it does!

I've used SMSbackup+ and it works well. Backs up to your Gmail account and you can set it to backup automatically at certain times and only if connected by wifi.

I've had this a couple of times on my Desire Z too. First time I lost everything.

After that I installed SMS Backup & Restore and have it backing up everymorning which works perfectly.

The second time everything disappeared I simply restored my back up and had lost only about 3 texts which I had received after the backup!

Never had this with any of my Android handsets (there has been a lot..!) though I do recall our receptionist moaning about something similar last week and she also has a Desire-Z.

Will have a chat to her later today and see if it was the same thing.

It's still pretty moronic if you ask me, you shouldn't need to depend on a random teenager to write an SMS backup app! Phones should be idiot-proof! This is my first Android handset but I've been using smartphones for 6 years and never experienced anything like this! This happened TWICE and I've only owned the damned thing since February! Half-baked pile of buggy asterisks if you ask me...

That's the thing though, they aren't really phones any more. The phone part tends to be almost an addon to the rest of it.

It still shouldn't happen but there you go.

HTC's own texting system is utterly disgraceful. I've had to limit my texts per conversation to 50 otherwise when I open the app my phone freezes for a good 3-4 minutes. The girlfriend's convo used to be 2000 texts, and while I admit that's a bit much it would cause my phone to freeze then the message app to crash. The thing was, you could only delete the texts...INSIDE the message app. I had to do a factory reset. Urgh, HTC.

I've never had an issue with the HTC SMS app on the Hero, the Desire or the Desire HD.

Also, I dont think texts vanishing is limited to Sense UI, it happens on all Android phones.

Well, this is my first Android handset so I didn't even know the messaging app on my Desire Z was made by HTC... had assumed it was the stock Android one... :o
I'll get one of the ones on the market and use that instead I guess, can't get them back but should prevent it happening again. Or would it? Is it really a problem with the app, or is it possible it's a problem with the way the OS handles the SMS database? And can I truly and totally bypass whatever's causing the problem just by using a 3rd party app?
