Really annoyed at these modern phone OSs, I swear even Windows CE 5 had fewer bugs. Horrible interface, slow as hell, but fewer bugs!

Try iOs, sure it may not allow you to tweak every little thing but it's far more reliable and less buggy IMO.

EDIT: That said, I'm not sure if there's an easy way of backing your SMS' on an iPhone, but backing up does sound like a good way around this issue.
