OK, I'm one of the first to jump on Magick and the rest of the giant alien ***** crew, and I am not saying for a minute that what I just saw was extra terrestrial. That out of the way, here's what happened:

I was out walking the dog as I normally do at the same time every night, tonight is fairly cloudy but not massively so. There were no visible stars in the sky. Suddenly something in the sky caught my eye, I saw a formation of 5 orange lights slowly moving across the sky. They were in perfect formation, and remained the exact same distance from each other. They then went behind a small area of cloud cover, and never re-emerged the other side.

This all took place in the space of around a minute. I did take a video but it was on my iphone so it's pretty much useless, you can't really see much. I have tried 'enhancing' it but it's still not really any good.

Obvious thought is Chinese Lanterns, but surely a group of them wouldn't maintain a perfect formation, and keep a perfect distance from each other? And why did they completely vanish?

Again, I am NOT saying it's Aliums, but I'm genuinely interested to hear what you guys think they were :)

Either that or there was more cloud up there than you first thought?

That was my thoughts as to why they appeared to 'vanish', the cloud cover that they went behind was pretty clear to see though, and they didn't come out the other side as you would expect.

That aside, if it were lanterns (which I accept is the most likely cause), then why/how did they keep such a perfect formation?

5 chinese lanterns tied together?

Tied together perhaps, for reason of causing someone to make this thread? :D

It is the kind of thing I would try if I had a load of chinese lanterns! :p

Very possible, but they weren't in a straight line, they were in a sort of triangular formation, and unless they were held in 'shape' by some sort of 'skeleton' I don't see how they stayed in such a perfect formation?

Go on, share the footage!

upload the original footage, im sure there are some uber video editing people that could work wonders on it. Maybe edit in a new OMGALIENZ!

OK, but be warned it's worse than useless, and what you can see just looks like stars because I was 'tracking' the lights with my phone, so you can't really see any movement. Will upload now.

Uploading to youtube now, if anybody wants the original file let me know. It is shockingly bad though.

OK, I upped the brightness and contrast in Powerdirector so the lights were at least visible, but when I uploaded it to Youtube from directly within the program it doesn't appear to have applied the 'enhancements'

Anyway FWIW here it is, but like I said you can't actually see anything really, especially with Youtube's compression....

the best I can find is 4 sources of light.

There was another one in the 'corner' of first group in that pic, but when I started filming they had already started to disappear behind the cloud cover. When I initially saw them they were all the same brightness.

could it be Bootes?

Definitely not stars, they were moving across the sky and there were no other stars visible. They also didn't appear to be as 'high' as stars if you catch my drift. The vid doesn't represent what I saw at all really :(

Lanterns are still the most obvious explanation I reckon, still find it strange that they kept a perfect formation though :shrugs:
