Hi all

I've bought a computer and it's not so great on the internet side... it's taken over 3 nights to download 4Gb.

The connection is ok as my laptop downloaded it in 2 hours...

I have this... 150Mbps Mini Wireless N USB Adapter TL-WN723N

it came with the computer but is spiking and dropping out like crazy i can't get anything done... is it a problem with my settings or should i just buy a new device... wouldent mind one that installs into the rig...

Pc has a fresh install and works super quick with everything else.. it works quickly on the net but the rig has to sit 3ft from the router to make that happen.. if i take the pc upstairs it fluctuates massively.

I'm thinking that this little USB wireless just isnt strong enough to get a decent signal and stable signal upstairs...

Asus PCE-N15 300Mbps 802.11B/G/N Wireless PCI-E Network Adapter [PCE-N15]

wanting to buy this but not sure it will fit my motherboard

network

* Realtek RTL8101E Ethernet Controller
* 10/100 Mbit

Expansion Slots

* 1x PCI Express 16X
* 1x PCI Express 1X

i want a decent one as im upgrading the pc as i go and i dont want a poor signal

i also have a edimax wireless lan pci card with IEEE 802.11g and turbo mode.

what should i get i really need help with this as most of the OCuk ones dont have reviews and the one mentioned above is the only one without any issues.. and believe me if there are issues i will have them.

i bought the Tp link high gain ... hope it works ojk, i cant find a spec on the o2 wirless box 4 which i have but it supports n so it should be fine

Can't cable it there's no Net port

...my motherboard

network

* Realtek RTL8101E Ethernet Controller
* 10/100 Mbit
...

:p

Also did you try changing the wireless channel in case of congestion/interference? Worth a try. Could also be a physical factor (eg metal in walls, thick brick or stone) preventing a decent signal between rooms.

There is a networking port but its not working with the ethernet, ive been into the device manager and its working fine but it won't pick up the signal or even register that a ethernets in there, hence does not have one.

Never seen a Pc do that before all i can think is the ports gone.

It could be running on the same channel as my Gf's Laptop but it still should not fluctuate so extremely. ( its running at bits level... it takes 4 hours to download a 13Mb file..)

I had it downstairs while the GF was streaming series and it worked fine... i think it just has a rubbish range. the house is made of blue brick but im directly above the router 3m or less and theres only wood between us.

I can only think that the signal breaks up when i go upstairs because its a weak little usb device. I've bought the TP high gain now anyway and i'll see the effect when i'm home.. i'll let you know how i get on.

one addition is it is fine sat 3 ft from the router but upstairs it just does not work.

You say laptop connects ok ... is that from same position upstairs as this PC. While wireless coverage from standard antenna on routers is described as "omindirectional" they do tend to have dead/low strength areas around the vertical axis of the antenna. Thus if PC is upstairs and nearly directly above the router then it might be in a very low signal strength area. That combined with a marginal performance wireless adapter might be tipping it into the unreliable connection region.

Yes the laptop works everywhere even halfway down the garden...if fact ill just secretly open us the GF's laptop take out the wireless and seal it back up, when she finds it not working i'll say "here darling you can have my wireless usb adaptor" and she'll love me forever...

Go to the MB manufacturers website and install the newest ethernet drivers.

I bought a TP Link High Gain 300Mbs adaptor for £20... all the reviews were 5*, got it home and it would not work, rang the helpline and got a chinese lady who had no clue and i could hear/ understand, had to find and install new drivers specially.... worked great yesterday now its got full bars excellent connection but won't work... i swear any issues with the internet and i have them.. it could be the most expensive device/ componant in the world installed by bill gates himself and i can tell you now he would be scratching his head over it the next day.
