WTF?

Hi,

Need a bit of help tonight....

Came home to find my PC off, turned it on and now I get a lot of this when I try to start Folding...

[20:35:44] + Processing work unit
[20:35:44] Core required: FahCore_a1.exe
[20:35:44] Core found.
[20:35:44] Working on Unit 07 [July 14 20:35:44]
[20:35:44] + Working ...
[20:35:52] CoreStatus = 63 (99)
[20:35:52] + Error starting Folding@Home core.

After a few tries like this, it downloads a new core and then repeats the process.

It'll download a new core 5 times then tell me it's going to have a bit of a kip for a day due to sheer exhaustion!

It's worked OK up till now, any ideas anyone?

DON'T PANIC!!!!

Got it sorted (just totally reinstalled SMP Folding)!

Lost my WU though (only 15% luckily)

Still like to know if anyone else has had this one though, so feel free to share...

Folding wiki says it could be permissions related.

Yeah, he's certainly got the same error as I had, but he seems to have it for a different reason in that he's running more than one instance of Folding.

I'm only running one instance (WINSMP) and the -local flag is set.

As 'time goes by' I'm wondering if it was anything to do with SMPD.EXE, but only because Norton keeps flagging it up as a Trojan and blocking its flamin' access!!!

I wonder....

Ho-hum....

Well, there you have it. Norton has come knuckling into the rescue, loincloth, club and all. It's seen a file that isn't installed with Windows and has proceded to bash it.

The only course of action to remove Norton, burn the CD, and buy NOD32.

Hmmm, it's certainly worth thinking about, although as I have 3 PCs, it could be fairly expensive.

I see one or two companies are doing multi-pc versions of their software now which works out cheaper.

I've got round it by setting a rule for Norton, but when my subscription runs out, who knows?

As I said, it's worth thinking about!

i had that a few days ago - just reinstalled the win smp from scratch to get rid of it.

no idea why i had it

NOD32 is about £60 for 3 PCs

Norton is £40 quid just for one. And it is crap. Easy decisions methinks.

I dont even use antivirus these days. Keep windows fully up to date, avoiding IE and have a good router is my way. At the most I use AVG free.

Personally, I dont use any. The downstairs computer though (which everyone uses) gets AVG on it because I cant babysit it all the time. Although it hasnt since I put Vista on it a few months ago. If that makes sense.

AVG on all my PC's

Free, small, fast,

and nobody is aloud to run downloaded files without my permission

I binned AVG in favour of Avast - seems to be a little more on the ball then AVG was for me, I certainly wouldn't pay when there are decent programs to be had for free which won't try and stop you using your PC the way you want to

NOD32 is the best I have ever used.

It is so unintrusive it can be months before I think to check on it.

To be honest any good Antivirus will be pretty much completely unintrusive and wont stop you using your computer.

Basically that means everything but Norton is ok

McAfee seems to be a pretty damn huge program (45mb RAM) otherwise its ok.

For me AVG is just an icon in the system tray that I ocasionally use to do a manual update, as it updates when you turn your computer on by default and seeing as my PC's dont often restart, and I haven't got round to getting it to schedule itself an update every so many hours

I tried Avast once because I wanted to try a 64bit antivirus only it just didnt work it said everything was running ok but it actually wasn't doing anything.

Never tried the standard version, I'm sure it's ok

Back on topic, lol:

I had a similar problem a while back but I can't rembmer what I did I think that code is a permission problem as SiriusB said. I think I had to run install.bat again to configure my windows username and password.
