That's ridiculous considering what they were doing? If they pushed you though or punched you, surely then you could punch them back? (if you really wanted!)The shopkeeper did the wrong thing in the situation. You are not supposed to go and grab them, because if they suffer any injury, no matter how small, they can claim against you and your company for damages.

Interesting, didn't know that.You don't have to be physically pushed or attacked to strike someone. You can pre-emptively do the same if you believe you are about to be attacked.

They may inflict violence and use weapons to do so.
The level of violence may include killing the assailant.
An individual may even act pre-emptively and still be found to have acted in elf-defence.
The confusion may be that the above is not enshrined verbatim into UK law although the law is quite clear that you can do the above but it must be justified and proportionate to the threat faced.
