I have the Creative X-FI Extreme Gamer sound card and it stops responding and I can't hear any sound or it is muffled.

This used to happen occasionally but now it happens every week or so. When this happens I have to go into the Console Launcher and switch sound modes which usually does the trick if not I have to restart my system.

I have the latest drivers installed on Windows 7x64. I bought this card in 2007 do you think it's time for a new one?

Possible it has developed a fault, but it's best to try modified drivers. I'd give PAX drivers a go first. Make sure you use a driver cleaner first after un-installing as the current drivers leave quite a few files behind.

Normally they are software suites. Most of it is what you get with Creative software bundles. All the extra stuff is not the reason to use the PAX drivers, it's because Creative drivers aren't very good when it comes to their older X-Fi cards with newer OS. PAX drivers have been modified to correct problems some people have with Creative's. They won't solve problems for everyone, but it's worth a go trying them before deciding to get a new card.
